"We had an area of our lawn that despite care and irrigation would not reliably and uniformly grow grass. We hired M&L Landscaping to take out whatever was left of the old lawn and replace it with new sod. They did the work last fall and now with the spring this year it looks OUTSTANDING and is growing fast. The M&L team did a great job and we are very happy with both the results and their commitment to us in the future. A first class job done by highly knowledgeable professionals. We will contract with them again in the future for other landscaping projects."

"We had a completely defunct lawn and had consulted with several lawn care specialist who recommended expensive sod. John can our saw my yard and my dog and suggested that sod was not best and that we could get a good result with hydro seeding. We now have a lush green lawn and I believe it is more likely to stay that way as it was home grown. How great to find someone who did not try to do the most expensive restoration but the most appropriate for our yard. He also took us to the nursery to find some new shrubs and installed these as well. We will be using his service for lawn care going forward."

"I tried Sod for my yard twice but my German Shepard killed it. I figured I give this a try and it has been two weeks so far and I feel it is one of the best things I have done. Yard looks great and the crew that put it in did an awesome job. They did a lot of work to level out the yard and to secure the turf down. Anyone is welcome to come and check this out in Lowell Ma. "Rich is extremely knowledgeable about plants and very detail oriented - this enabled him to successfully work in our jam-packed flowerbeds without damaging existing plantings and to weed correctly. He and his assistant worked tirelessly to get everything done as efficiently as possible. They were on time, professional, considerate of our budget and cleaned up throughly when finished. Rich promptly responded to us within 24hrs whether it was via email, voicemail or text to setup the initial appointment, strategize what garden bed cleanup, plantings, trees, landscaping or mulching had to be completed first and in what sequence. He also responded to questions we had after the work was completed and volunteered to come back to install quick connects on the irrigation hoses. We would hire him 24/7 as our personal gardener if we could!"

"Great job on short notice, the Thursday before Christmas. They were able to remove a tree, do some serious pruning of large branches overhanging my house, as well as a yard clean up and they did my gutters for me too. I would definitely recommend KJAY Tree Service & Landscaping."

"I hired Rocha’s Landscaping to mow my lawn every 2 weeks. They do a great job! Their team comes, gets the mowing and trimming done quickly, and yard looks nice. I recently asked if they could trim the invasive weed/vine that’s been taking over and choking the bushes and tree in my front yard. They came the next day and took care of it completely, pulling the vine out from the ground and removing it from the tree. I was amazed! I highly recommend Rocha’s."

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

Since you’ll likely be digging a trench to install your yard drainage system, this is a good time to complete other tasks that involve digging up your yard, including: Sprinkler system installation Lawn reseeding Regrading your yard Redesigning your landscaping If your drain is under a walkway or driveway, your contractor must also remove those materials. This is a great time to consider upgrading your hardscaping features, especially if they’re nearing the end of their life span.

The best way to landscape your front yard on a budget is to invest in hiring a professional for hardscaping—things like upgrading walkways, redoing driveways, and installing partitions around garden beds. You can often do the softscaping yourself—think laying down mulch, caring for your lawn, removing weeds, and planting flowers and shrubs. It’s also almost always worthwhile to pay a professional for routine yard maintenance, as this dramatically improves curb appeal and delivers above 100% ROI in most cases.

If you choose to leave gaps between your pavers, you can grow some ground cover plants between them for an organic feel. Look for plants such as creeping thyme, dymondia, jewel mint of Corsica, or clover.

Pavers are one of the most affordable methods of creating an elevated outdoor space. Gravel is an equally affordable alternative. If your budget permits, you can look into building a permeable driveway to ensure proper drainage. Grid pavers, pervious concrete, brick, and brick pavement are all effective materials. Permeable driveways are great options, especially if you live in an area with heavy rainstorms.

The most important thing to put under a rock garden is the appropriate soil. The specific soil needed will depend on the type of plants you’re growing as well as the environment you live in. You can also put non-woven or woven fabric under the rocks to add to the garden's structural stability.
