No, you don’t need a ductless unit in every room. Ductless AC units don't work the way that window units do, where the air doesn't travel outside that room. The indoor air handlers all attach to the outdoor condenser. While the air doesn't travel the way that traditional ductwork would, the ductless AC units create zones so that one part of the home can be cooler than another. They can spread effectively enough that indoor units only need to be placed in main living areas.

There are two main reasons your furnace and AC are turning on at the same time. The first could be that you’re confusing the furnace with the blower. The blower is located in the furnace and will turn on to distribute cool air from the air conditioner through the ductwork in the home. This is normal. If the actual furnace is turning on at the same time as the AC and hot and cool air are coming into the home, it could be a result of incorrect writing to a new thermostat or new systems.

The cost to install a ductless mini-split AC system ranges from $2,000 to $14,000, depending on the type of unit, the number of zones or rooms, and the complexity of the installation. On the low end, a system for one or two zones in a single room costs around $2,000. Covering two zones for more rooms can cost between $6,000 and $8,000. For a larger multi-zone system to cover an entire home, costs can be $14,000. If you don’t already have an AC system in place, you may need to add the cost of permits, an electrician, and a concrete pad.

ACs don't run on water. They're not connected to drain pipes or any part of your plumbing system. However, they need refrigerant to run. Refrigerant is a gas or liquid that has a low boiling point and absorbs the heat in your home. ACs need this in order to be functional and cool your home. If you suspect your AC is low on refrigerant, you need to contact a licensed HVAC professional. Refrigerant is a dangerous chemical that requires specialized training and permits to work with. 

During the summer, it’s best to set your AC to 78 degrees when you’re home and awake, according to the Department of Energy (DOE). For better energy efficiency, raise the temperature slightly to 85 degrees while you’re out of the house. The National Sleep Foundation advises lowering your thermostat to between 60 and 67 degrees when you’re asleep.
