"Brent is a hands on business man and offers a professional excavating service that is unmatched in the area. Not only did Brent tackle a difficult project , he met the challenge by suggesting small changes in consultation with engineer and inspector to maximize grade and space . Fox excavation was a pleasure to work with . The project was completed within the stated time frame and updates were communicated daily during the installation . I would not hesitate to recommend Fox Excavating for your septic system installation or repair. Steven K. Nieminen Chester, Massachusetts"

"Absolutely fabulous! I had an overgrown lawn about 3ft high and they didn’t even blink! Just said no problem! They were also the only people I called that actually answered their phone.& I didn’t have to leave a msg with a computer prompt that kept cutting me off. They even came to ck out the job first. It was a huge job and they are miracle workers. I will be utilizing their services for years to come. 10 stars! Definitely recommend them."

"Wanted to clean up a side drive way for boat and truck. Joe came over and we discussed options. Glad we did. Pricing was very reasonable. Very happy with job. Also had a wooded area with 20yrs plus of leaves, old wood etc. Agreed on pricing and had them back to clean that area up. Hard working, good group of guys. Will call back for future projects."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

The cost to repair a crawl space runs between $1,500 and $15,000, depending on the extent of the damage. Major flooding or water repairs can cost up to $10,000 for removal and repairs. If you simply need to clean your crawl space, expect to pay between $2,000 and $6,000 for a major cleanout. Replacing a crawl space beam due to rot or damage can cost between $1,500 and $5,000, while removing and replacing damaged insulation costs between $1,000 and $4,000.

No, you typically cannot use metal detectors to find your sewer line. Most sewer lines are made of non-metallic materials such as PVC, clay, or cast iron, which are not detectable by standard metal detectors. Metal detectors are designed to locate metallic objects, so they won't be effective for identifying the path of a non-metallic sewer line. To locate your sewer line accurately, it's best to use other methods.

To locate an underground downspout, you should start by identifying where the above ground gutter drains. Look for an entry point, such as a pipe or elbow leading into the ground. Follow the surface path for signs like depressions, landscaping disruptions, or wet areas after rain. You can use a metal detector or plumber’s snake to trace the pipe underground. For deeper pipes, a professional locator tool or camera inspection may be necessary. Visual markers or utility maps can also guide the search.

Trenchers can dig holes as narrow as 4 inches or as wide as 4 feet. Check the specifications of the trencher you rent or buy to determine how wide it will cut into the landscape. Better yet, let the excavation company know how wide you’d like the trench to be, and they can help you choose the right trencher for the job (or do it for you).

Prior to excavation, you should prepare the dig site and call 311 before you sign anything.

To get your site ready for excavation, you should move anything in the area that isn’t affixed to the land. You can save money on the excavation by removing hardscaping, including walkways, decks, concrete patios, and paver patios.

Before you carry out any digging, you should call 311 to confirm that there are no utility lines running through your excavation site. Skipping this step could lead to severe injury and property damage if your excavator hits a water, sewage, or gas line.
