"Rocky Ridge excavated a drainage trench and installed valves and piping. We are so relieved to have our sump discharge taken care of properly. Rocky Ridge was knowledgeable about the process and kept us informed of options all along the way. It is a pleasure to work with them."

"Absolutely fabulous! I had an overgrown lawn about 3ft high and they didn’t even blink! Just said no problem! They were also the only people I called that actually answered their phone.& I didn’t have to leave a msg with a computer prompt that kept cutting me off. They even came to ck out the job first. It was a huge job and they are miracle workers. I will be utilizing their services for years to come. 10 stars! Definitely recommend them."

"Pat fixed a badly leaking foundation in a 90 year old house. He followed up after the next rain storms and fixed the few new spots as well. His attention to detail is the best part. He wants to do the job right. Since then I have also had him do some extensive landscaping, building an access road to a part of the yard that had been unreachable, as well as excavating and pouring cement. Again, outstanding work and attention to detail. Hire him the job will be done right."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Tree experts don’t advise against digging through tree roots, but instead encourage caution and consultation with a local arborist to make sure you don’t damage the tree’s structure or interrupt its water or nutrient intake. An arborist can recommend specific practices when digging and help prune the roots or dig a trench for utilities with a tool that can remove soil without touching the tree’s roots.

Excavation is priced in cubic yards, so you’ll need to find the volume of the area in order to calculate costs. Multiply the length, width, and proposed depth of your excavation site, then convert it into yards to get the volume. Multiply this figure by the price per cubic yard.

Most homeowners can measure by hand to get a rough estimate, even if it’s tedious. You may want to pull out a tape measure or use a string to help mark the area.

Trenchers can dig holes as narrow as 4 inches or as wide as 4 feet. Check the specifications of the trencher you rent or buy to determine how wide it will cut into the landscape. Better yet, let the excavation company know how wide you’d like the trench to be, and they can help you choose the right trencher for the job (or do it for you).

The physical constraints of hand-drilling a well limit the depth you can achieve. Manually digging with picks and shovels may only lead to shallow wells of up to 60 feet in depth. To reach greater depths, you need more specialized equipment. The diameter of your well and the tools you’re using will determine how far down you can dig.

Yes, trenchers can go through gravel. Gravel is made up of smaller, softer rocks that certain trenchers are able to cut through. Just be sure to use a rock wheel trencher or chain trencher, both of which are made to cut through rocky landscapes and gravel pathways without dulling the teeth or chain.
