"I had them completely the siding and roof on the backside of my house, which included a very tall/high chimney. They also touched up other trim work around the house and painted everything to match my existing trim. They really did a great job. The workmanship was great, the follow - up and customer services was superior. I will definitely use them again They really are the best company I’ve dealt with in years! The lifespan of siding ranges from 20 to over 100 years, depending heavily on the material, climate, quality of installation, and maintenance.

  • Vinyl, Wood, and Aluminum: Typically last 20 to 40 years. Engineered wood may need replacement after just 20 years.

  • Fiber Cement: Lasts around 50 years.

  • Brick and Stone: These are the most durable, lasting for a century or more with proper care.

The longevity of any siding can be shortened if it's not properly maintained or if damage is not repaired promptly. Regular cleaning is vital. It's time for a replacement when you see widespread damage, signs of water intrusion, or a spike in energy costs.

You can put new siding over clapboards, but it’s not recommended. Some sidings, like vinyl siding, can go over clapboards with sheathing like a foam layer in between. However, it’s best to remove clapboard siding if you plan on replacing it with new siding. Burying wood clapboards underneath new siding can create risks of rot and mold, or hidden insect damage. It can also create warping issues over time. Removing clapboards allows you to properly install a new sheathing, as well as clean up the exterior wall and look for any signs of damage.

Not wrapping a house before installing siding can lead to moisture intrusion, rot, mold, and even higher energy bills. Older houses may have siding installed without wrap underneath, so it’s a good idea to add a wrap layer when it comes time to replace old siding to prevent potential damage from water intrusion—local codes may even require it, so check with your municipal building authority. 

You cannot install clapboard siding on a bare, unprepared surface. Clapboard siding requires a clean, sturdy base made from plywood or similar materials, sometimes called backerboard. Then, it needs an underlayment or sheathing, a moisture membrane to help protect the exterior wall.

Note that sometimes clapboard siding is caulked as it’s installed for additional protection. We don’t suggest this: Caulking the siding can trap moisture inside the clapboards and lead to moisture damage over time. The siding needs some space to “breathe,” especially in rainy weather.
