"My wife and I moved into our new house last May and wanted to make some changes in the kitchen.  After putting in a new fridge and oven, we really wanted to have some proper ventilation in the kitchen.  We heard about Todd (the owner of Booth's Home Repair) from a promotional flyer that we received from the mail.  We wound up choosing him for a few reasons; not only was he a friendly person who seemed to know what he was talking about when he came to give the initial quote, but it was really hard to find other people who were willing to take on this job.  I think it was too small for the full-time kitchen remodelers, but too big a job for most handymen.
After Todd gave us a quote we exchanged a series of emails to hammer out precisely what we wanted done with the project.  This took a while because I like to understand every detail before moving forward on things, but Todd was very nice about responding to my emails.  Once we got the date marked on our Calendar, Todd and Dave showed up and got to work.  This was not a small job!  You can see from above that this job took a variety of skills, and Todd and Dave really handled all of them extremely well.  They had to come back over several days to finish everything (mudding, sanding and painting in particular take a while), but each day they left the kitchen in good shape so we could use it for cooking that night.  There were also a few obstacles that they hit along the way, the sorts of things that are totally unpredictable until you are deep into the job.  Despite the fact that some seemed like they might derail the entire project, Todd and Dave found a way to make things work.
We've had the hood for about a little under a year now and we feel like it is some of the best money we've spent in the house.  It looks great, opens our kitchen up, and is extremely functional.  The worksmanship that went into the installation of the hood and making it seem like it was original to the design of the kitchen is truly impressive.  These guys did a great job, were extremely friendly and forthcoming while they were working, and would definitely be people I call again if I needed other things done around the house.

"Bertie was recommended to us by a friend for some work that he completed in Jamaica Plain. We recently built a 2nd floor on our cape in Milton and needed walls and ceilings in three bedrooms, a bathroom, and a hallway and stairwell. Bertie was prompt with his bid and was extremely flexible with his start date. He was finished with the entire job in less than four days, which was incredibly impressive. In addition, part of the demolition included tearing down two walls on the first floor and a strip of drywall by the front door. Without asking, Bertie fixed those as well and included them in the price. Furthermore, we are installing a pocket door and need to wait for that before drywall goes up, plus our plumber needs access to the shower before the durock goes up, and Bertie has already committed to helping us with those issues as soon as they are ready. I would absolutely hire Bertie again in a second if the need ever arises again."

"Patrick and team worked on an interior painting project to paint doors, trims, walls and ceiling. They did an awesome job. Patrick was very detail oriented and ensured all steps are followed in the process to get the best out come with clean looking finish. They were very independent and moved the stuff around where needed and kept the work going. Very happy with their work and would hire again or refer to friends and family."

Fire Pit Installation questions, answered by experts

Beyond having an inspection, it’s important to do chimney maintenance at least annually to be certain the chimney is safe to use. Cleaning the flue of any built-up particles, creosote, and soot reduces the risk of fire. Fortunately, the cost of hiring a pro to do a chimney inspection often includes a chimney cleaning, so you may not have an extra expense for maintenance.

Your smoke detector might be too high in some homes or circumstances to reach yourself. If you feel unsafe getting on a ladder to replace your hardwired smoke detector, call a licensed electrician or local handyman to knock this project off your to-do list. If you have a battery-operated smoke detector, your local fire department can change the batteries or help you replace the detector—just make sure you call the non-emergency number.

In any case, do not let this project go unresolved, as it could turn into a huge safety issue.

No, a chirping smoke alarm is usually a sign of an issue with the power supply of the unit. This is easily solved by replacing the battery to stop the smoke alarm from beeping. If the chirp continues, review the owner’s manual to determine the cause. These chirps are short and not as loud as the beeping of the alarm itself. If you can’t tell the difference, it’s best to treat it like an activated alarm until you find the cause.

Start by checking the top or side edge of the door. Look for a certification label or metal tag stamped with details like the fire rating and information on the manufacturer. Even if it’s painted over, the tag should still be visible. Next, look along the edges for slim intumescent strips. They’re designed to swell up and seal gaps when exposed to heat. Finally, check if the door closes itself. Most fire doors have a self-closing mechanism, like an overhead closer or spring hinges. If none of these are obvious, contact a fire safety professional to help verify your door.

Yes, windows being painted shut is a fire hazard. Because windows painted shut may have locks that stick or cannot be opened easily in an emergency, this becomes an immediate fire hazard that should be dealt with.
