Most bathroom walls will require two coats of paint, as this ensures proper coverage. If you’re painting over a darker color with a lighter color, you may need additional coats. If you’re just refreshing with the same shade, one coat of paint is usually fine. It’s a good idea to put down one to two coats of primer before painting to ensure the best results. If you have the room prepped and ready to paint first thing in the morning, you may be able to paint a room in one day. Spackling, patching, and priming require time to dry before painting, so those steps will likely take you beyond the span of a workday. There are two primer choices: oil-based or latex-based. Choose an oil-based primer for durability and adhesion, but prepare for extra dry time and more VOC (volatile organic compounds) fumes. Or, pick a stain-blocking latex primer. They’re easy to apply, clean up, and affordable.

A professional painter will typically prep the walls to ensure a longer-lasting, smoother paint job. Prepping the walls can involve scraping off debris or flaked paint, filling in grooves or nail holes, sanding, cleaning, applying a coat of primer, taping the trim, and removing outlet covers. You should ask your painter before hiring about their process to make sure it’s in line with your expectations and needs.

The type of paint you use on concrete influences how long it will last. Epoxy paint can last as long as 30 years and often comes with a warranty for at least 15 years. Another factor impacting the longevity of the paint is how much wear and tear the floors receive, such as heavy machinery or constant foot traffic, which can shorten the life span.
