Crawl space encapsulation typically lasts between 10 to 20 years. Whether interior versus exterior basement waterproofing is better for your home depends on your budget. The majority of water issues that homeowners experience in their basements are due to conditions that start outside of the home. So, to prevent those problems from seeping in, it’s better to stop them at the source using outside waterproofing methods.

Water damage always poses the risk of mold, but if you act quickly enough (within the first 24 hours), you may be able to avoid mold growth resulting from water damage. Clean up the water quickly and thoroughly dry the area. If the issue is more extensive or you didn’t act quickly enough, it’s always safer to assume mold has grown and hire a mold inspector to examine the area.

If you set up a dehumidifier, it will usually dry out your wet crawl space within 12 to 24 hours. Once the space is dry, it’s a good idea to take preventative measures to keep it dry. These include installing a French drain or other exterior foundation drainage system, installing a sump pump in the crawl space, and installing a vapor barrier in addition to leaving the dehumidifier running.

A plastic vapor barrier should completely cover your basement to prevent water from penetrating through the walls. This typically goes before installing insulation to prevent moisture from building up and becoming trapped on the inside of your insulation, where it can collect and lead to mold damage. Installing insulation after the vapor barrier allows for any moisture to exit the walls for better ventilation.
