Metz Fine Furniture is run by Rick Metz, a sole proprietor with over 34 years of experience in the industry. He is a native to Cincinnati, Ohio. At the young age of five he received his first erector set, and ironically built a chair. Rick comes from a long line of woodcrafters. His love for designing and building furniture was ignited when he was given an opportunity to build custom pieces while employed by A.B. Closson's, a prominent furniture/ art dealer in the Cincinnati area. In 1986 Rick took a major step towards entrepreneurship, and became the sole proprietor of Metz Fine Furniture Repair. There his talents expanded in blending wood color stains and learning to correct problems from damaged wood or recreating a table corner enjoyed by one of his customer's pets. Rick became locally renowned for his talent and expertise. He found himself overwhelmed by business drawn from customer referrals. His work has been featured in numerous magazine and news stations, including Cincinnati Enquirer, Ohio Magazine, Indiana Hill Living, Hyde Park Living, Best of Cincinnati Magazine, WCPO TV, and WXIX TV. Furniture Reupholstery questions, answered by experts

Furniture reupholstery costs vary based on many factors, but most projects cost between $350 and $1,100, with an average price of $700 per piece. Some factors that affect the price of furniture reupholstery include:

  • Size of the piece

  • Current condition of the material

  • Materials used

  • Age of your furniture

  • Additional furniture repairs

  • Number of pieces of furniture

  • Your location and whether or not the work is done on-site

Costs depend on fabric choice, furniture size, cushioning, and labor. For significant projects, expect estimates between $350 and $1,200.

DIY upholstery is feasible for simple pieces with the right tools and skills, though intricate jobs typically require professional expertise for the best results.

Reupholstering an old or antique chair can be worthwhile if the frame is still sturdy and the piece has sentimental or monetary value. Reupholstery often costs less than buying a high-quality new chair, and you can customize the look. However, extensive repairs or rare fabrics may increase the total cost.

Yes, you can reupholster antique furniture, and it’s a great way to extend the life of your pieces and keep them looking fresh and new for years to come. In fact, since reupholstering furniture is significantly more affordable than replacing it, reviving antique furniture can be a cost-effective way to keep that family heirloom usable for much longer. It’s usually a good idea to leave antique reupholstering to a professional, as they will have the tools and expertise to ensure the piece isn’t damaged and looks professionally finished.
