"I had no input on which water heater they installed. The Lochinvar has a constantly flashing light, makes a lot of noise, and cost over $2,000, which none of my friends or family said was within reason."

"My technician, Timothy N., was timely and thorough in replacing my water heater and sump pump. I live in an old house with a lot of outdated plumbing. He inspected and replaced some old valves and copper piping that was developing a leak. He took his time to make sure that everything was completed properly. He even made sure that the temperature setting was the same as it had been before. (I have young children who like to play with the faucets, and I didn't want the temperature too hot.) I really like the look of my new water heater and everything is working great."

"We have a very old stone wall cellar that houses our water heater and furnace. Water would seep in walls and lay on floor which , besides being somewhat dangerous to those appliances, would also make the house smell moldy and musty. The Everydry people explained everything thoroughly and helped us understand the process. We had this done 3 years ago and the difference in the damp and smell is amazing. They were and still are friendly and knowledgeable and willing to help. I highly recommend them!"

"The work was quality and very efficient. We needed a bathtub that was safe for our baby that was on the way and something that was actually usable. It was a very short tub that came with the house and could only be filled up with 7 inches of water; and the shower head has horrible pressure and was super short. Mad City presented us with lots of options to remodel our tub and informed us on the why tubs from Mad City last for a long time. The workers were very professional and it was done in one day!"

"I highly recommend Benjamin Franklin Plumbing. They cam within a day of when I called, assessed and fixed one problem, installed a new water heater the same day, and returned the next day to install new pipes above the water heater. The plumbers were polite, professional, and explained clearly what they were doing. Pricing was very reasonable and I also have a yearly service contract. Office personnel were also friendly and knowledgeable. Will only use them from now on."

"It went great. This is the first time I ever tried virtual repair services. Once I booked the appointment and told them the general problem and the model number of my refrigerator, they sent me a confirmation email along with a link to the app that is used for you and the technician to connect. Also, they sent a list of items that I might need for diagnosis and repair. I found the technician to be extremely knowledgeable. He knew the components of the ice maker like the back of his hand and was able to tell me what to do to remove it as well as to take it apart to look at some of the internal parts to determine what had happened. He understood and was able to explain how it works so I learned a lot about how ice makers work and why certain problems that I have had with this one might occur. In my case, the ice maker was getting stuck in the fill position which was causing water to flood my refrigerator and kitchen. Its unclear why exactly it got stuck, because there didn't appear to be any burn out in the motor, but this model is 17 years old so the best bet is to simply replace it. I feel confident now that I can replace it without assistance. I would definitely do this again. Harmond was great and being able to schedule something the same day as well as learn a little about how to service myself was well worth the money and much less expensive than waiting for a service technician to show up to my home. If you're a little bit handy, I would definitely recommend trying it out!"

"Installers did an excellent job job and am very pleased with the shower. Replaced our shower in 5 hours and redid the water pipes inside the wall. Put covering on all the floors they walked on."

The average cost to install a new water heater is around $1,300, but you can expect to pay between $875 and $1,750, depending on the kind of water heater, the size of the unit, and the professional chosen to complete the work. Tankless water heaters can push your price higher, as installation is more complicated, with prices as high as $3,500. The location and accessibility of your water heater will play a role in the project cost, as those sitting in tight spaces like a crawl space will drive up your labor costs.
Tankless water heaters are more expensive than those with a storage tank, but they come with some impressive benefits that most homeowners find worth the higher investment. Most importantly, they provide unlimited hot water, so you’ll never run out like you would with a storage tank. Tankless heaters are also more efficient, so comparing gallon-for-gallon, you’ll spend less on hot water with a tankless heater. Tankless water heaters are also smaller, require less maintenance, and tend to last longer than storage tank water heaters.
It usually takes a professional water heater installer between two and three hours to remove an existing water heater and install a new tank heater. However, it could take four to five hours if they have to work in a small utility closet or another tight area, like a crawl space. Tankless water heaters have a more complicated installation process, so they will take a bit longer. Additionally, a gas water heater requires a connection to a gas line, and that alone can add about an hour to the installation timeline compared to installing an electric water heater.
It is very difficult and dangerous to install your own water heater, so we strongly recommend against tackling this as a DIY project. Not only will you need to wire your water heater, but you’ll also need to connect plumbing to the intake and outlet. Sweating copper pipes and connecting wiring properly are skills most DIYers don’t have, and even if you do feel confident you can do it, working with water and electricity always leaves the potential for electrocution. Hiring a local water heater installer is well worth the investment.
In most municipalities, a license is not mandatory for water heater installation or replacement. However, we strongly recommend hiring a licensed plumber or water heater installer to handle the work. Licensed installers are far less likely to make a mistake during the installation, which means paying for the experience decreases your risk of a leak and other issues. You can use our state licensing tool to find out if a contractor you’re considering in your area holds a plumber’s license.
