Drywalling a garage is a smart decision if you want to protect your garage from fires, moisture damage, and exterior noise. Most garages have flammable supplies that could result in serious damage in the off chance of an accident. Drywall is fire resistant, helping to prevent fires from spreading. The level of insulation is determined by both the material and the thickness of the door. Some garage door materials (such as wood) have natural insulating capabilities, while other materials (such as metal) do not. No matter the material, two-layer and three-layer garage doors have a higher R-value than single-layer garage doors, as insulation is fitted between the panels. 

It’s possible to use a torch to melt ice on your garage door, but we don’t recommend it. It’s very easy to bring the flame too close to the door, which can melt the weather stripping or even the garage door itself. You’ll melt ice quickly with a torch, but the damage you’re likely to cause can end up costing you a few hundred dollars to fix, which isn’t worth it. Instead, we recommend pouring hot water over the frozen area or using a less intense heat source, like a hair dryer or space heater.

Garage door sensors work by using infrared beams to detect objects in the door’s path. One sensor sends a beam while the other receives it. When the beam is broken—say, by your car or anything else—the sensors signal the door to stop or reverse. It’s all about safety and making sure nothing gets trapped under the door. If they’re misaligned, the beam doesn’t connect, and the garage door might stay open or close regardless of obstructions.

The most common garage door material is aluminum, but the best material for you depends on your budget and location. Wood is the most expensive to repair but tends to add the most curb appeal, while fiberglass or composite doors cost less to fix.

Aluminum won’t rust, so it’s a great option if you live somewhere humid or rainy. Steel doors are durable but are prone to rust. If you live somewhere with extreme temperatures, hot or cold, you might opt for fiberglass, which won’t split if the temperatures skyrocket or drop below freezing.
