"vinyl siding strip was dislodged from the gable of our residence. Despite contacting several roofing, gutter, and siding contractors, we received no return calls, and those who agreed to visits failed to appear. Recognizing the potential for damage to the exposed wood if left unaddressed, we had been attempting to arrange repairs for over a month. Consequently, we sought assistance from Angie's List, as they had previously provided satisfactory service. They connected us with Starnes Seamless Gutters & Siding. Within two minutes of submitting our project request, they contacted us via telephone and arrived within the hour, fortuitously being in the area. A reasonable and fair estimate was provided, which we accepted, and the work was promised to be completed on Saturday. The contractor arrived as scheduled and completed the work within approximately one hour. We highly recommend this business and extend our gratitude to Angie's List for their recommendation. Siding questions, answered by experts

Yes, vinyl siding can be installed over existing materials in some cases, assuming the underlying structure is sound and the installation will not cause moisture issues.

You can put new siding over clapboards, but it’s not recommended. Some sidings, like vinyl siding, can go over clapboards with sheathing like a foam layer in between. However, it’s best to remove clapboard siding if you plan on replacing it with new siding. Burying wood clapboards underneath new siding can create risks of rot and mold, or hidden insect damage. It can also create warping issues over time. Removing clapboards allows you to properly install a new sheathing, as well as clean up the exterior wall and look for any signs of damage.

The average cost to replace siding is $10,500, but you should expect to pay an average of $12,000 to install new siding over stucco. The additional cost goes toward assessing the old stucco for damage, any necessary repairs before the new siding goes up, and the materials and labor required to install furring strips over the stucco to attach the new material. Even with this additional cost, installing siding over stucco is often more affordable than removing the stucco and starting over.

The lifespan of siding ranges from 20 to over 100 years, depending heavily on the material, climate, quality of installation, and maintenance.

  • Vinyl, Wood, and Aluminum: Typically last 20 to 40 years. Engineered wood may need replacement after just 20 years.

  • Fiber Cement: Lasts around 50 years.

  • Brick and Stone: These are the most durable, lasting for a century or more with proper care.

The longevity of any siding can be shortened if it's not properly maintained or if damage is not repaired promptly. Regular cleaning is vital. It's time for a replacement when you see widespread damage, signs of water intrusion, or a spike in energy costs.

You should use a siding nail gun for siding installation, but if you don’t have one you can use a framing nailer instead, if the nails are long enough to firmly attach to the clapboard siding. However, framing requires longer nails that join lumber together. In that instance, siding nails will not be enough.
