There are times when you should remove all exterior paint before repainting. Depending on the state of the wallpaper, color, and textures could show through, and moisture from the paint could loosen the adhesive, causing unsightly bubbling.

If you’re repainting with the same sheen, it’s possible to apply satin paint over satin. However, if you’re reducing the glossiness and using a flatter paint, you should sand first to take off some of the sheen. Sanding will also help the next coat of paint stick to the wall better, so it’s a good idea, even if you’re not changing the sheen.

The two most common paint types are latex-based paint and oil-based paint. Here are some of the most significant differences between the two:

  • Requires good ventilation while drying
