Before hiring a handyperson, it's important to ask several questions to ensure they are the right fit for the job. Key areas to cover include their experience, logistics, and job specifics.

Experience and Qualifications:

• What kind of work do you specialize in?

• How long have you been doing this kind of work?

• Are you licensed and insured?

• Do you have references?

• Can you provide before-and-after photos of your work?

Estimates and Contracts:

• Do you charge for estimates?

• Will you provide a written estimate and contract?

• Does the estimate cover both labor and materials?

• How much do you expect materials to cost?

Project Details and Guarantees:

• When can you start the job, and how long do you expect it to take?

• Do you provide a guarantee for your work?

• Will you handle cleanup and waste disposal after the job is finished?

• Do you have any questions about the projects on my list?

While a handyperson will do the odd small job for your home, a maintenance person is responsible for conducting regular inspections and repairs. Maintenance people may come in to do small fixes and diagnose any issues you might be facing, but may not have all the same technical abilities as a handyperson.

Most professional appliance removal companies will not expect a tip, but offering one is a good way to show appreciation for a job well done. A tip of 10% to 20% is a good idea if your professionals are working in the rain or snow, if they take extra care not to damage your walls and furniture in the removal process, or if they need to maneuver the appliance through tight spaces or up or down stairs to get it out of your home.

In most states, handypeople do not need to be licensed to perform simple home repair tasks and smaller jobs. When projects exceed specific cost amounts, however, ranging from $500 in California to $50,000 in other states, some municipalities consider them to be contractors, meaning they need to be licensed. To learn if your handyperson should be licensed to work on your job, contact your local governing body or state contractors’ licensing board before starting any work.
