"We are very happy having hired WR Painting! We have an old brick home with lots of detail work and it now looks fabulous. Greg gave us a competitive price and he, Candito, and their crew handled our rather complicated color scheme expertly. Everyone on crew was respectful and took great care to protect our brickwork, patio, driveway, etc. from any paint drops. They cleaned up after working every day, and finished the job in only 3 days (we thought it would take a week!). At the final walk through, there was not one place that needed to be touched up. That was pretty amazing! We would highly recommend WR Painting!"

"Blue Chip Painting did an awesome job on our exterior painting for the trim and gutters. Also power washed and stained our deck and fence. The excessive heat caused some minor issues on the decking and Ralph sent his team over immediately to fix the areas. Ralph is so professional and courteous."

Painting questions, answered by experts

On most untreated wood fences, there is no need to sand before treating. You typically only need to sand if there’s an old coat of paint or stain on your fence. If you do need to sand off a previous paint or protective coating (like an old stain or sealant), use medium-grit sandpaper.

A dry lawn is easier to edge than a wet one. When your ground is wet, your blades will likely clump together, making a seemingly even cut while wet, but an uneven disaster when dried. Also, a wet lawn can impact your blade's performance and cause mud to kick up, resulting in a messy finish.

Regular staining, sealing, and inspecting for rot or insect damage prolongs fence lifespan.

Staining a wood fence isn’t guaranteed to prevent warping, but it can help. Plus, it’s a beginner-friendly DIY project that you can finish in a few days. If you want to try it, you’ll start by stripping it of any old stain or paint, then sanding it. After that, you’ll clean it and spot-treat any mold or mildew. When it’s dry, you can apply the stain.

There are several ways to make a wooden fence more visually appealing and keep it that way for years to come.

  • Treat the fence with a wood sealant to protect it against the elements. It’s recommended to reseal a fence every two to three years, but if you live in a harsh climate, you may want to do it more frequently than that.

  • Restore the fence if it’s old, corroding, or fading. That includes cleaning it and making small repairs where needed.

  • Paint the fence in a color that you like, whether that’s a simple white or more vibrant option. Fences usually need to be repainted every one to three years.

  • Decorate the fence with planters, string lights, birdhouses, mirrors, shutters, and more.
