You can technically just paint over hairline cracks in plaster since these cracks are often harmless, but this will mostly be a waste of paint. Watch for large, deep cracks, multiple cracks in the same area, and cracks along the walls where they meet the ceiling. Repair these cracks to prevent further damage.
