"They responded quickly to our initial call out and we were very impressed with how well they made the damage safe and weather proof. They were extremely helpful and efficient. We did not hesitate to use them as our contractors once the quotes had been excepted. Lee Ricky, the owner of the company, made us feel completely at ease explaining to us what needed to be done, how and when. He is extremely polite, knowledgeable and considerate. After having a structural survey, Lee explained how his contractors would fix the damage and gave us a realistic and flexible timeframe. Lee arranged for his expert contractors to complete each task as suggested by the structural survey. After important work was completed the work was inspected and anything missed or in need of further work was done before the next stage started. We had different people for roofing, brick work, electrics, painting etc., each and everyone we were pleased with, I am sure that they wouldn't be working for Lee if he wasn't 100% happy with them.. As with most building work there were some unforeseen problems - e.g. more rubble in the roof than expected! The contractors delt with problems as they occurred. The finished work is better than what we had to start with! We were extremely impressed with the brick work - every effort was made to match it with our existing brick. The work is complete and we are very happy with it. Lee Ricky and his team of "merry men" have done a wonderful job. The company Potter House Group can handle anything to do with building I'm sure.....................

"I had a fantastic experience working with this drafting firm. From the very first phone call, Kirsten?our drafting consultant? was clear, professional, and incredibly helpful. She explained the entire process in detail and made sure all of my questions were answered up front, which gave me immediate confidence in the team. This firm partnered with engineers and architects to get the best quote for me on a stamp for my plans after they did an exceptional job on drawing the prints that met all the requirements for permitting. Their coordination and attention to detail made the process very simple on my end. If you are looking for a highly capable drafting firm that knows how to get things done right, I highly recommend them!"

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

If you intend to do the majority of the work yourself, you can pay to hire an architect or a structural engineer to ensure your home remains structurally sound. They can help with the planning to make sure everything is up to code and safe for your family. On the other hand, if you’re not sure your home will be completely safe when you’ve completed the project, let a pro do the job.

A construction manager is particularly useful in the case of a large-scale build with custom design elements, so it’s usually worth it to hire one. They can help manage your budget, maintain quality control, oversee timelines, and navigate unexpected hurdles. While construction managers are pricey, they can actually save money in the long run by identifying cost-saving opportunities and ensuring the project stays within budget.

The essential difference between an architect and an engineer is that architects typically focus more on the aesthetic design of buildings, although not without consideration for the structural integrity of the building. Engineers focus more on the structural, technical, and practical aspects of whether and how an architectural design can be built as drawn. You may need to hire both types of professionals if you’re designing and building a new home.

No, it’s not legal for unlicensed individuals to conduct structural calculations for buildings or building repairs. Not only do licensing requirements prevent DIYers from tackling this project, but mistakes can also be extremely dangerous and put your property and anyone inside or near it at risk of severe injury or even death. You should always hire a licensed and certified local structural engineer to make structural calculations.

Water can seep into porous materials like wood beams, floor joists, and roof rafters within minutes, but they’ll need to see prolonged exposure before you have structural damage. Mold can start growing within 24 hours, and mold can eat away at the structural components over time. Wood rot is more of a concern, though. Wet and dry rot are fungal infections that set in in moist conditions and rapidly deteriorate wood, causing major structural damage within just a few months in some cases.
