While gasket-sealed PVC flanges are the type most commonly found in homes, flanges come in a range of different materials, including copper, brass, stainless steel, cast iron, and aluminum, that pros sometimes secure with glue. When working on your bathroom floor tiling, you should always tile the floor first and then refit the toilet afterward. This has both practical and visual advantages—the tile will have a better seal, and the installation will look cleaner.

If your clog does not go beyond the toilet’s wax seal, a 3-foot auger would be sufficient. Otherwise, you may need a 6-foot auger to unclog the drain.

If a bolt at the bottom of your toilet tank is loose, it can directly cause a leak. If a bolt securing the toilet base to the floor is loose, it won’t directly cause a leak but can lead to the same result over time. That’s because the loose bolts will eventually move the wax seal or cause cracks in the bowl from the toilet being wobbly.

Usually it’s fine to leave a toilet clogged overnight, as long as it’s not close to overflowing. In some cases, the extra time may give the clog time to work itself out. For example, if it’s caused by an excess of toilet paper, letting it sit could result in the clog dissolving and you may be able to simply flush it away by the time you wake up. 

Only let it sit though if you have more than one toilet in the home.
