"These guys are fantastic! They answered on the first call and were able to squeeze me in that day. The original call was to replace a high limit switch (or something to that effect), but the unit was over 20 years old and we were unsure if that would fix it or not. I asked them to go ahead and give me a quote on a new unit, just in case. It was an extremely fair and competitive price (as I have had others give me a quote in the past.) Sure enough, the fix was just a band-aid to a bigger issue so I had them replace the unit. They were able to schedule me three days later. They were on time and completed the work when promised. The biggest thing that impressed me the most was their communication. They always answered when I called (which was always during business hours) and they even sent me a text the day after installation to check in and make sure that everything was performing well. I've never had a Heating and Air company follow-up with me! These are my guys from here on out. If you want contractor that has great communication, shows up on time, and does great work at a great price then you should make K&S your Heating and Air guys too!"

Integrated solar energy solutions: photovoltaic, solar-thermal, battery storage and heat pumps. We are not tied to any specific PV manufacturer and will source the best solution for your location and situation. Solar energy is no longer idealists' domain - it makes solid financial sense. Whether your goal is to minimize the time until your solar installation is paid off, or you want to ride out the Zombie apocalypse in comfortable energy self-sufficiency, we have the perfect solution for your location and building use. Contrary to popular perception, year-round self-sufficiency can be reasonably achieved in the Midwest. We have close relationships to vendors of weekly and seasonal energy storage systems which will keep lights and heat on year-round.

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

HVAC systems should be serviced annually, no matter which type of system you have. This service visit should include an inspection, cleaning, and regular maintenance tasks, like flushing the boiler. The best time to do this varies on the system. For heating-based systems, call in a technician sometime during the fall. For air conditioners, go for the spring. Basically, schedule the service call before you plan on amping up HVAC system usage for the season.

The general rule of thumb for figuring out how much AC tonnage you need in your home is that for every 500 to 600 square feet of space you need to cool, you’ll need one ton of AC cooling power. So, a 1,000-square-foot home will need 2 tons of AC power.

If you’re shopping around for a rooftop AC unit, you may hear them referred to as “package units.” That’s because rooftop AC systems are all-in-one heating and cooling units that connect directly to your home’s ductwork. If your AC repair pro references a package unit, they are referring to the system on your roof.

If possible, avoid placing furniture in front of a return air vent. A blocked air vent can cause your HVAC system to use more energy, which in turn can lower the life span of your unit and raise your energy bill. Furniture can also trap hot or cold air, damaging your furniture or appliances.

Professional duct installers suggest leaving between six and 12 inches of space in front of an air return vent. If you must place furniture in front of a return air vent, try to aim for putting furniture over a floor vent instead of in front of a wall vent, and avoid draping curtains over any vent system.

One of the fastest ways to unfreeze an AC unit is to turn off the unit and, if it’s warm outside, use the fan-only mode to help blow warmer air through the unit to speed up the defrosting process. While it may be tempting to use a hair dryer to defrost the air conditioner, that high heat can damage the coils.

After defrosting, if you can safely solve the issue with a fix like changing the filter, go ahead and do so. Otherwise, call in a pro before turning your AC back on.
