"They showed up on time and cleaned out the pipe so our washing machine will drain properly. They explained how we can maintain the drain better to prevent this in the future. You do need to know that they charge $100 for the service call, then any parts and labor charges are in addition to that. I was able to apply the Angie's List coupon which was very nice. Good service all around."

In most cases, a gas stove should be installed by a licensed plumber. Connecting gas appliances carries many risks, chief among them a fatal gas leak. If your home is already set up with the proper gas hookups, you may be able to DIY the installation (or save money by hiring a local handyperson or basic appliance installer near you rather than a plumber). You should have a licensed plumber to install a gas line for your new gas fireplace. As experts in all things natural gas, these professionals understand how to work with gas safely to avoid explosions, leaks, and other potentially hazardous situations. They also know how to handle the other aspects of the process, including pulling permits, digging trenches, and connecting new gas lines to old lines.

Call 811 to locate and mark the gas lines at least three days before digging. In many areas, you can dig within 18 inches of the lines, though in some locations, the distance may be further. Check local regulations, as you may need a utility company representative onsite when digging. Document your calls to 811 and precautions taken to avoid gas lines. A homeowner can be held liable for hitting a gas line in some cases, but contacting the proper authorities and following all guidelines can offer protection.

The easiest way to empty a propane tank is to simply use it until no propane remains. If you’re short on time and need a faster solution, transfer the propane to another tank instead. Wear leather gloves to protect your hands, then connect the hoses from both propane tanks and seal them tightly. Turn the knob to open the supply tank valve on the full tank and let it run until the pressure pushes all the propane into the other tank. When all propane is transferred, remove the hose and seal each tank. 

If your home uses more than one gas appliance, you'll continue to use gas, even outside of the heating season. Your water heater, gas stove and oven, and gas dryer will all use some gas, although typically much less than a furnace. Additionally, those appliances may also have a pilot light that is lit continually, using a small amount even when no one is at home.
