"A sole proprietor business, Green Star provided a very competitive itemized written bid. Stuart was very accommodating in considering old (>100 years) home challenges and discussing insulation options and solutions. Promptly arrived on scheduled date, his team was diligent in adding blow in insulation to attic and exterior wall space, as well as foam to basement sill plates, all in one day. Very friendly, knowledgable, professional and unobtrusive in providing their services."

"Brendan is efficient, intelligent and polite on the phone. We spoke a few weeks ago. He has not installed the insulation yet as I did not have a paycheck for the job that month; I'm self-employed. Do you have his cell # handy so I can contact him? Send me another one of these "rating" emails in a few weeks and I'll let you know how the job performance was after the fact. Thanks, Matt."

"I started looking for remodeling companies at the remodeling show several months before I met with companies to discuss price, etc. Frankly, I walked past the Young Remodeling booth because it was so beautiful that I assumed it would be too expensive. However, after checking the ratings on Angie's List, I decided to get a bid from Young. They were the fourth of four contractors I to bid on the job. When I got their bid, I told Randy that they came in 2-3 thousand higher than anyone else. The net day, he called me back and said that the owner, Paul Young would like to meet with me. Paul and Randy came out and looked at the bathroom. Then Paul and I discussed what I envisioned for the bathroom. He said that they could come very close to what the others had bid. Later, when I was discussing the options with my husband, I realized that Young was the only company that was going to take out all of the walls, floor, and ceiling, not just those in the tub/shower area. With the other contractors, I was going to have to remove the wallpaper myself. The folks at Young told me not to bother removing the wallpaper since they would be tearing out the walls and using waterproof backer board throughout the entire bathroom. They also were the only ones to bid a new window rather than re-use the old one. In addition, the other contractors said it would be a problem to move the toilet, but Young suggested we move it in order to increase the size of the shower. They told me that moving the stool was no problem at all. In addition to all of the above, Paul Young held my hand through the entire process. He gave me sound design advice, then went with me to pick out everything. He even told me when items I chose would exceed my budget. When I chose a counter top and shower door that would increase the cost, he asked me several times if I was sure I wanted to incur the increased cost. He held my deposit check until he felt certain that I was certain about the increase. I appreciated his concern and patience. The project took a little longer than anticipated, but that was because I pushed them to start sooner than planned and therefore, the custom items weren't quite ready. It was well worth the wait. The quality of the work done in the bathroom is phenomenal. The tile work is gorgeous, and the custom vanity exceeded expectations. When I changed my mind in mid project about the placement of the grab bars which had already been installed, it was no big deal to them even though the change required extra sheet rock work. I added a minor change to the project which also increased the total cost. The addition was to install a comfort height toilet and grab bars in my 1/2 bath on the main level of the house. Now both of the bathrooms my mother uses are safe as well as beautiful.

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Yes, exposure to fiberglass insulation can cause harm to your skin and eyes. However, this typically refers to the fiberglass insulation that is mostly used in walls and attics. Fiberglass doors don’t pose risks for fiberglass exposure because they're fully encased in polymer cladding.

In addition to adding insulation to your attic, you may want to add a radiant barrier. A radiant barrier works by using reflective material, such as foil, on the attic floor. As heat penetrates the roof and enters the attic, the radiant barrier reflects the heat upward and back through the roof. If you receive a lot of direct sunlight on the roof, using both a radiant barrier and insulation in your attic can provide significant benefits.

In some cases, yes, insulating an unheated garage can lead to mold and mildew. The issue with insulating a garage is that the interior will warm up and cool down more slowly than the exterior air, which can cause condensation inside the space. Where there is moisture, there is likely to be mold and mildew over time. Installing a vapor barrier can help avoid moisture and mildew problems in an insulated garage.

Expect your home insulation project to take between five and 12 hours to complete on average for batts or boards and two to five hours for spray foam or blown-in insulation. It might take longer if you need to remove your home’s existing insulation, you have a higher-than-average square footage, or accessibility is limited.

Minimal but regular checks can ensure maximum thermal performance.
