Furniture Repair & Restoration, Specializing in Antiques but we repair and restore furniture of all ages and types. I've been in business since 1980. We invite interested customers to call for general information or email description with pictures of their project. Even better, we appreciate customers who like to visit our showroom and shop to see the quality of our shop and the work we do. Our shop is organized and equipped with full wood shop capabilities as well as a professional spray booth. Many of the pieces we restore for customers are in extreme disrepair, often needing extensive woodworking repair and new parts. The foundation of our good reputation is a vast catalog of many complete rebuilding and refinishing projects we've seen over 30 years. While refinishing is our signature service and is often the most efficient option for restoring pieces in very poor condition, we recognize that stripping and refinishing is not the best approach in all cases nor the most desirable. In that direction we offer a range of alternate procedures for improving the existing finish and preserving it instead of stripping and replacing it. We provide small repair services such as regluing chairs. We offer on-site services for residential furniture cleaning, spot color work and preservation treatments. On-site services also extend to commercial and institutional work. An example of a most demanding on-site project was our work in restoring the rostrums in the Kansas State Senate and House of Representatives. We offer estimates whenever possible by phone and email contact. Pictures sent by email are especially helfpful. After discussing with you by phone, we are open to coming to your location to provide a quote or you may bring your item to us. When we see the item in person we will provide a written quotation to you for the work. The shop is closed on Saturdays but we are willing to meet by appointment on Saturday if you are coming from out of town or have other special circumstance.

Furniture Refinishing questions, answered by experts

Sometimes you will need a stronger cleaning solution to thoroughly clean furniture before painting. It’s best to start with a mild solution to avoid damaging the surface, especially if it is an antique piece. If you need to use a stronger mixture, try a commercial cleaner or mineral spirits. Before applying any solution, do a test patch on an inconspicuous area so you don’t risk damaging the finish.

Wood stain remover should remove most, if not all, of that wood stain on its own. While sanding can be a great final step, especially if you’re planning to paint or restrain the wood, it isn’t always required. Following the first three steps of this process can leave you with beautiful results.

Wood furniture gets sticky when dirt and grime accumulate on the surface. Sometimes, wax coatings and oils are the culprit, but other times, it’s a sign that the finish is failing, and no amount of cleaning your wood furniture will help. Varnish and lacquer can both get sticky as they age, and in this case, you’ll need to refinish the wood to stop the issue.

Follow care instructions based on the material, regularly clean, and avoid moisture or heat exposure.

If you recently splashed paint on the wrong area of a wooden object, remove it with a solvent or caustic paint stripper. Some paint that has yet to dry may be removable by hand with coarse sandpaper or a plastic scraper. Another trick for removing dried-on paint is rubbing a dab of nail polish remover on the paint to remove it, but avoid touching the bare wood surface.
