"Excellent! Frazer's Tree Service was doing some work in my neighborhood Thursday. Spouse and I had been talking about getting a tree removed for some time, so I went over to get a phone number. The owner (Charles) walked back with me to look at the problem tree and gave me an estimate on the spot. He said if it wasn't raining, he could work me in today (Saturday). He showed up promptly at 9:00 this morning with a crew of four and had everything down, chipped, picked up, and loaded before 11:00. Clean up was outstanding and he was very protective of the lawn (they carried the tree parts to the fence and threw them over rather than driving in the yard). He even blew out the chain saw chips that had fallen at the base of the tree. He said it was an easy job because he could fell the tree all at once rather than having to take it down a piece at a time. He did so well, I'm having him bid another larger (and more complicated) job Monday in Maryville, MO. If we can come to terms on that one, I'll let you know how it goes."

"David's Tree Service was very professional as well as customer friendly. The workers were very knowledgeable on the process of trimming and the cutting trees down. They also did a great job cleaning all areas where they either trimmed trees and cutting the trees down. I would highly recommend them."

It’s not as common for Dutch elm disease to affect other types of trees, especially if the surrounding trees aren’t elms. However, it is possible for DED to spread to other trees, particularly in northern states, like Minnesota. Unfortunately, the complex and shallow root system of elm trees makes surrounding elm trees particularly vulnerable to DED. Early discovery is key!

Removing tree stumps is a dangerous and complex job that requires a high level of expertise. Many landscapers specialize in general lawn care and maintenance. But, some may have the proper licensing and qualifications needed to safely remove tree stumps. In most cases, though, landscapers will refer you to a local tree removal or stump grinding company.

Unfortunately, palm tree stumps are one of the most difficult types to remove due to how their roots grow. Unlike other trees, palm tree roots grow horizontally and vertically. Palm tree roots grow as deep as three feet into the ground, although soil and growing conditions could mean they go as far as 50 inches into the earth. 

If you want to be able to repurpose the grass in the area where you removed a stump later, you’ll have to dig quite deep—and perhaps wide—to trim away all the roots.

You’ll want to have your palm trees trimmed during the spring, ideally in May, before hurricane season sets in, which generally takes place during the late summer. Palm trees grow fastest over the summer months. You’ll also want to trim your palm trees when you notice:

  • Brown fronds 

  • Dry leaves

  • Flower pods

  • Fruit

  • Fronds overgrown in power lines

  • Frond encroaching upon your neighbor’s home or yard 

  • Visible damage from a storm

If you aren’t sure what you’re doing, be very careful when cutting mature tree roots (roots larger than 2 inches). Root cutting and pruning can affect both a tree’s stability and its ability to nourish itself. Issues during root cutting can result in damage or injury. 

It’s recommended you call in a pro to help, unless it’s a very small tree and you aren’t worried about the prospect of losing the tree.
