"I had a regular cleaning on Wednesday, June 21. This wasn't my first cleaning with this company or with the crew that came. After they left, I was asked how it went and told them that the floors were still dirty. Later that day, I also found residue in the kitchen sink but was able to wipe it off. The next morning I found residue all over my stainless steel kitchen appliances. Most of this wiped off but, when I got to the oven I found that the labels on my oven knobs had been partially removed. Whatever they cleaned with and had left on the oven had taken them off. Since I check these knobs every day before I leave the house to make sure they are off, I knew they were fine before the cleaning. I reached out to the company Saturday morning with pictures and was told they would look into it. I checked in every 2-3 days but there was no further information. They said they were trying to find out what the cleaning crew had used on the oven and made it clear that the crew had excellent reviews. I couldn't help feeling like they didn't believe me. After all, regardless of what cleaning product had been used, this was the situation I found myself dealing with. I'm sure it was an accident but it shouldn't have happened. The cost of a new part on GE's website is $300, so I asked them to pay for the part and to refund me the cost of the clean, which I hadn't been happy with in the first place. Mind you, I didn't even ask them to cover the cost for an electrician to install the new part. Right after the clean, I had questioned why I was charged $255 for 3 people to clean for 70 minutes when I had been charged $60/hour/person for one-off cleanings. They told me it was because regular cleanings cost more. But, if that were the case, what is the advantage of a regular clean? If you're a repeat customer, shouldn't you be receiving a discount for regular cleans? After getting the run-around all week, they offered to refund me the cost of the clean plus a discount of $45 on the next clean. I refused since I would never have this company clean for me again after such an egregious error. They reversed the charge on my card but why had that taken so long? An honest company would have accepted responsibility for the issue that occurred, taken me at my word, as well as the pictures and video I had (showing them cleaning with something other than soap and water), and in good faith offered to pay for the part. Sadly, I'm out the cost of the part and the installation costs and my house is still dirty."

House Cleaning questions, answered by experts

To find the best house cleaner to keep your place pristine while freeing up your time, ask for word-of-mouth recommendations and check online reviews. Arrange background checks for any housekeeper you’re considering hiring and ensure they have appropriate bonds and insurance. It's also worth interviewing the company or individual cleaner and outlining expectations.

To avoid the residue that leaves floors sticky, be sure you use the right amount of cleaning solution. Also note the motion of your mopping to avoid mopping over parts of the floor that you have already cleaned.

If you don’t want to use dishwasher pods, you can use liquid or powder dishwasher detergent or dishwasher tablets. Alternatively, you can make a DIY dish detergent by putting two or three drops of liquid dishwashing soap in the dispenser and filling the rest with baking soda. You should never use laundry detergent, household all-purpose cleaners, or a full dispenser of liquid dish detergent.

Whether or not a cleaner brings supplies also depends on their preference. Some cleaning services require the homeowner to supply cleaning products and a few basic materials (sponges, paper towels, rags, a mop, and vacuum, for example), but others bring everything they need to get in, clean, and get out.

You can always ask whether or not they bring their cleaning supplies, and if so, make sure you’re comfortable with what they use. If you prefer organic or natural products, for example, you may need to supply them or pay a premium.

Individual professional organizers don’t typically provide a house cleaning service. However, some companies that offer professional organizing services also offer other home services, such as cleaning. If you are looking for a cleaning service and a professional closet organizer, finding a company that does both can be more economical.
