"We purchased this house in the fall of 2014. The house was not cared for... by the previous owners and we bought it knowing it needed a lot of work. Since we have known Brian, we have hired him and his company to provide us with pest control services as well as a termite treatment. As we have lived here, we had Brian do a whole house inspection for us. Since we already owned the house... it was for our own benefit. Brian literally crawled into every space in this home... and spent literally hours inspecting everything. He spent a lot of time in our crawl spaces. He pointed out all the potential problem areas and verified some areas of concern. He also spent considerable time on the roof with me looking at possible trouble spots and recommended a few fixes to things that have never been noticed by anyone else. He was MUCH more thorough than the original pre-buy home inspector we had hired just a year before when we purchased this home. Brian's report has helped us with prioritizing home repairs and with planning. I would definitely recommend Brian and Allman Home Inspections for any house inspection.

"This is the second time I have hired Allman, and the second review. The first was for moles. This review pertains to hiring them again for general insect control at my home. Two of them were at the house for maybe two hours (I don't recall exactly). In addition to educating me on replacing mulch with rocks, arranging kitchen food, etc., they sprayed and even went as far as going through the crawl space and spray-foaming any gaps they saw leading into the home, such as around sink pipes. They showed me pictures of the work they did and then of rodent damage and the steps they took to eliminate that too. I never felt pressured. They keep it it friendly and easy-going. That goes a long way."

"I've used them for five or six years now for the fertilization and weed control. They usually call me and ask if, since the season is starting, I want them to do the five or six treatments for the year and I just tell them yes, take care of it. I feel it's reasonably priced. I glance and the bill and it's not a number that scares me. They recently came out, and before they started, he knocked on my door to say he was here and I told him that I had just thrown grass seed out so he didn't do the service. It was great that he knocked first, because the service would have knocked out the new seeds. So, the fact that they check with you when they arrive, most of the time, is nice. They almost always call to say that they're coming out. Last time they didn't, but that was the first time in five years that I haven't gotten a phone call to say they're going to be out on this date. So, I like the fact that they're calling so that I know someone is going to be in the yard and I can pull the dog in."

Pest Control questions, answered by experts

To determine if you have a rat or mouse infestation, look for several key differences. The most obvious is the size of the rodent: rats are significantly larger with thicker bodies, while mice are much smaller and more slender. You can also identify them by their droppings; rat droppings are larger and rounder, about the size of a raisin, while mouse droppings are smaller, like a grain of rice, and often have pointed ends. Other signs include the sounds they make, as rats produce louder scratching and gnawing noises due to their size. Behaviorally, rats tend to be more cautious, whereas mice are more curious and might be seen more often. Additionally, rat nests are typically larger than those of mice. If you are unable to see the pest or find clear evidence, a professional inspection can provide a definitive identification.

You're more likely to find a hobo spider outside rather than inside your home. If you do find one in your home, don't panic. You can remove the spider by catching it in a glass or cup and transporting it outside. You may also vacuum up the spider and remove it by emptying the vacuum bag.

If you notice more than one spider, it may be a good idea to hire a local pest control company to check out the situation and recommend a course of action.

Look for goose repellents that contain the ingredient methyl anthranilate. This is a natural chemical found in grape juice. In human food, it’s often used as grape flavoring. With geese, it’s highly irritating. Grape Kool-Aid contains methyl anthranilate, the active ingredient in most bird repellents. It won’t harm geese, but it will deter them.

You might be tempted to call your local municipality to remove animals from your property, such as a groundhog burrowing in your yard or raccoons getting into your trash cans. However, they typically only remove domestic animals like dogs and cats from properties, or sick and injured wildlife that pose a public safety risk or health threat, such as a rabid animal. They typically do not capture or remove healthy wildlife.

Animal removal professionals have the tools, knowledge, and skills to trap and remove wild animals adequately and humanely. They also can relocate them correctly.

In most cases, a mother bird will return to a disturbed nest after the disturbance has passed. However, it can be hard for a mother bird to find a relocated nest. So, while it’s false that a mother bird will abandon her nest if it’s been disturbed, it’s not a good idea to relocate a nest with live babies or eggs in it.
