"They replaced sections of our sidewalk and driveway apron. They were prompt and the work looks great. Pricing was fair. They only complaint is they promised to level out the dirt displaced when removing and leveling the sidewalk and did not. They were also a bit sloppy and got globs of concrete on the asphalt driveway that was left to dry."

RISHEL EXCAVATING, INC.

"Mid-summer I began looking for a contractor to get us hooked up to city water. Rishel was the first I talked to. He came out and gave me the price. I contacted others who offered pricing but were not interested in the project. They referred me back to Rishel not knowing that I had already talked with him.
The difficulty and expense of the project was because when the water main was extended past our home a couple of years before it had to be put in with directional boring. This put the 18and quot; main nine feet below grade and on the other side of College Avenue. Rishel had the equipment and expertise to handle our job without cutting the road.
Over the next couple of months we were in constant contact. To do the job Rishel would have to put equipment on the lawn of the apartment complex across the street from us. He wanted to do the job at a time when they were less likely to cause lawn damage for the apartment complex or for us..
It was early October when that time arrived and we agreed on a day for them to begin. Their equipment arrived early on the designated morning and work began. The layout of the job was explained in detail to me and I was able to visualize the work and follow it as it progressed. The workers were efficient, extremely careful in all that they did. The work progressed seamlessly over the three days it took.
When they finished they left minimal evidence that they had been here. The necessary excavations for meter pit and tie in to the house were minimal and refilled back to ground level plus settling material left.
I was positively impressed by the expertise and caring with which the whole project was done. I certainly would recommend Rishel
to anyone needing excavation work.

Tony the Concrete Man was solicited for quote (one of three) based upon favorable ratings on Angie's List and number of recent favorable responses by customers. He provided a quotation that was favorable by comparison, even without consideration of Angie's List discounts noted in the listing. The total job required 4 days to complete:  On the first day, the old concrete driveway was broken up, removed, and hauled away. The front entry crack was trenched, and the spalled section of the garage was cut out and removed.  Framing for new concrete was placed, with grade of the new installation taken into consideration.  Existing gravel underlayment was regraded, and additional gravel was added and compacted to provide a sound base for approximately five inch thick new concrete.  On the second day, concrete was poured, even as the city inspector came to view the site ensuring that the installation was according to code.  Rebar was placed to tie new concrete to existing concrete of the garage floor.  Approximately 4 loads of concrete were required to satisfy the size of the job.  As the concrete set, the crew finished the surface with a decorative broomed design and  embossed lines to accommodate expansion.  Day two was approximately a 14 hour day, in dwindling twilight.  On day three, power washing of the backyard patio was completed, along with sealing of the driveway.  Power wash equipment problems were overcome after close coordination with equipment rental sources.  Day four included sealing of the backyard patio, delivery of dirt and backfill of driveway and sidewalk landscape around the removed forms, and complete clean-up of all debris.

Tony Johnson had three other members in his team, but was able to enlist other concrete workers as needed as the job progressed.  All were industrious in performing the tasks required as Tony directed and completed the many tasks needed to finish. They were all very considerate, respectful and friendly during the course of the job. Any questions or concerns I had were promptly addressed by Tony or his team members.

Concerns with excavation of a drainage hose were dismissed upon consultation with the Homeowner's Assoc Pres as confirmed by the City Inspector on a return visit to verify there were no violations of city right-of-way. I expressed an additional concern with the work being completed late in the season, with cold weather approaching, and reduced hours of daylight, in view of Portland Cement Institute recommendations for curing of the newly laid concrete.  Tony believed that there would still be enough heat in the ground so as to preclude any detrimental effect or reduced compressive strength of the new construction, with perhaps a longer period of time before full load was placed on the driveway.

A change in scope to add additional replacement of city sidewalk squares to extend to the property line were addressed by Tony, with a very favorable quotation on the additional work.

We recently got done with a major renovation of the interior of our home.  Now, with the compliments we have received on our new driveway, we may have to remodel the insides again in order to achieve the quality that Tony the Concrete Man achieved with the workmanship that he and his crew put into our outside space!

Tony's attitude toward the work, with his faith based background was a refreshing experience with a contractor.  I highly recommend his company for any of your concrete removal, renovation, or construction needs.

Concrete Cutting questions, answered by experts

You should not do your own welding unless you have the proper training and experience. Most home electrical systems can only handle MIG welding, which creates weaker bonds than TIG welding and won’t work on certain metals or metal thicknesses. Both welding forms usually require the use of shielding gas, which can be dangerous to store at home. Additionally, welding machines create temperatures of over 3,000 degrees, and the sparks can blind you if you don’t have the proper equipment. As such, it’s usually better to hire a professional welder for your welding projects.

Yes, but you’ll need reliable steel-cutting tools and safety gear to get started. Shipping containers are typically around ¾ inch thick, so it’s entirely possible to cut through them, but experience and the right equipment are very important. When possible, try to get a container as close to the size you want it as possible.

To maintain custom or fabricated metal structures and extend their lifespan and appearance, perform regular cleaning, apply rust prevention treatments, and use protective coatings.

Welders use a variety of methods in their trade. Different types of welding are better suited for different purposes and contexts. For example, stick welding is a versatile form suitable for most metals and alloys. The most common types of welding include:

  • Stick welding: $100–$1,000

  • Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding: $250 and up

  • Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding: $250 and up

  • Gas welding: $150 and up

  • Forge welding: $15–$25 per hour

Sawing your hot tub into more manageable chunks so it can be lifted easily into a truck takes several hours. Generally, 2.5 hours for smaller hot tubs and around 4 hours for larger ones with the help of one to two people. If money isn't a concern and you want to skip the physical labor, you can hire a pro to get the job done.
