"He submitted a bill of $21,000 for less than two full days of work by two men. All he did was remove about 150 sq ft of ceiling to allow water from a burst pipe to drain, bring in 8 dehumidifiers and 9 fans, take a couple of moisture readings, move three pieces of furniture down the hall in my house to a bedroom (charge for "major content manipulation" was $2960). I was extremely distraught at the damage and wrote him two checks-one for $2000 and one for $5000 which he cashed moments after getting it at my bank. Insurance adjustor recommended I tell him to stop all work on day three. He did and suddenly he was difficult to get hold of, did not show up for three scheduled meetings. On day six he sent someone I had never seen before with a rent a truck to get the equipment out of here. No protection for his two workers. Adjustor said an asbestos test should have been done prior to tearing down ceiling, and said he does not conform to industry standard charges (exacta mate?)"

Asbestos Removal questions, answered by experts

While it's possible to cover asbestos tile with carpet, it's not recommended. Encapsulating tile beneath carpet doesn't eliminate the health risks. Over time, the asbestos tiles could degrade, releasing fibers into the air and potentially contaminating the carpet. Disturbance during carpet installation or removal might also release fibers.

Asbestos itself does not typically leak from a roof. However, if an asbestos-containing roof is damaged or deteriorated, it can release asbestos fibers into the air. This can occur when the roof is disturbed, such as during maintenance or repairs, or due to weathering over time. Exposure to airborne asbestos fibers can be harmful to health, so it is important to address any damaged asbestos roofs promptly and safely.

Asbestos siding can be dangerous if disturbed because the material itself poses a health risk. Asbestos is one of the leading causes of lung cancer as it causes mesothelioma—an aggressive cancer. Asbestos can also cause irreversible damage to your lungs by creating a buildup of scar tissue, called asbestosis. It has a habit of making its way through even robust personal protective equipment (PPE), which is why it’s not recommended that you perform any asbestos work yourself.

Some pros may recommend covering a popcorn ceiling that tests positive for asbestos with beadboard ceiling planks or drywall. Installing a beadboard ceiling or new drywall will disturb the asbestos and release some microscopic fibers, so the installer will need to take precautions. 

Asbestos encapsulation is an alternative to asbestos abatement or removal. Suppose you have hired an asbestos testing service and they recommend encapsulation. In that case, they will cover the asbestos with a protective barrier or put it in a sealed enclosure so the fibers cannot escape. Encapsulation usually costs between $2 and $6 per square foot.
