"He submitted a bill of $21,000 for less than two full days of work by two men. All he did was remove about 150 sq ft of ceiling to allow water from a burst pipe to drain, bring in 8 dehumidifiers and 9 fans, take a couple of moisture readings, move three pieces of furniture down the hall in my house to a bedroom (charge for "major content manipulation" was $2960). I was extremely distraught at the damage and wrote him two checks-one for $2000 and one for $5000 which he cashed moments after getting it at my bank. Insurance adjustor recommended I tell him to stop all work on day three. He did and suddenly he was difficult to get hold of, did not show up for three scheduled meetings. On day six he sent someone I had never seen before with a rent a truck to get the equipment out of here. No protection for his two workers. Adjustor said an asbestos test should have been done prior to tearing down ceiling, and said he does not conform to industry standard charges (exacta mate?)"

Performing abatement for asbestos means the contractor removes or encapsulates the asbestos to protect your family’s health. The term abatement refers to the steps required to keep asbestos fibers from moving into the air. Understanding what asbestos abatement is can help you discuss the case with your contractors by understanding the jargon they use. 

Asbestos is a carcinogen, meaning it increases the risk of cancer. Inhaling asbestos fibers is linked to several respiratory issues, including asbestosis, or scarring on the lungs, lung cancer, and mesothelioma, another type of cancer. There's also a link between asbestos exposure and an increased risk of colon cancer and other cancers of the digestive system.

Usually, the people most at risk for disease related to asbestos exposure are those who spend a lot of time working around the material without protection. Electricians who work with asbestos wire have a higher risk of developing mesothelioma or lung cancer due to their exposure.

You can cover asbestos siding with another type of siding, such as vinyl, however, this may not be the best option. Covering the asbestos siding may disturb it, releasing fibers into the air. The covered siding can also be disturbed at a later date, such as by a new homeowner who is unaware of its presence.

If you decide to cover the siding, be sure to work with a professional and follow any local building codes and requirements. It may be the case that removing the asbestos siding is the better option, rather than covering it over. 

Asbestos siding on its own doesn’t present a health risk. Asbestos fibers only become airborne when you disturb the material. As long as the siding is in good condition, it shouldn’t release dangerous fibers into the air. If you’re ready to replace the siding anyway or if it’s in poor condition, hire a local asbestos removal contractor to remove, repair, or cover it safely.

Asbestos siding is harmful as it can produce fibers that, once inhaled into your respiratory system, may cause mesothelioma, other lung cancers, and a dangerous scarring of the lung tissue called asbestosis. You can contain the siding within a series of barriers, but it is our recommendation that you hire a professional to remove any asbestos in your house. Its presence can permanently alter your health and the value of your property by as much as 10% or more.
