"I had Canneys water come out because our water softener was stopping water flow in our entire house! They test the water and inform me that it's simply the filter which had a 1/4 layer of sediment on it. Canneys were who installed the unit. After install they walked me through use and maintenence of the unit but forgot to tell me there was a filter on it that needed to be changed every 6 months or so. I have had the unit 3 years!! In the three years they have been been out twice and never said anything about a filter. They said not to mess with the panel because the FILTER is set so many times a day✔️, to only use crystalized salt✅ but NOTHING about a filter and the unit is a medical necessity for our daughter. Then they say they can even replace the filter because they don't carry that style. So they did nothing as far as servicing my equipment AND the call would not have been needed if they had instructed me properly. So after being informed of the problem, one of the original installers was present and admits to not telling me that. I say listen, I'm expecting a significant discount on this service fee because had you told me about the filter it wouldn't have been necessary nor did you service my equipment! We call the main office and the OM speaks to the owner Kevin who says Ill take off. $25. I say absolutely not. I'm willing to pay half but given the circumstances I think that's more than fair. Owner refuses to discount more than$25 of the$139 service price stating, You are responsible for reading your own owners manual. As a small business owner, I think fairness, integrity and customer service are crucial to your business, as is word of mouth. I did read the manual but was walked through what I was supposed to do,and specifically told me not to mess with anything except the salt. Additionally they did not have the filter needed and told me they would charge an additional $139 to install if they ordered it. They also spotted up almost 2 hours late and did not call. I had to call to find them."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

No. You should never directly drain a water softener into a sewer cleanout. This practice is illegal in many areas because it could allow raw sewage to get into your drinking water and make you seriously ill. Many places have codes requiring a specific seal, pipe, and a large air gap between a water softener and a sewage cleanout. Check out Florida's Plumbing Building Code as an example of what these restrictions might look like.

Yes. To get soft water, you can install a water softening system, which will replace the calcium and magnesium ions in the water with sodium or potassium ions. Water softeners cost anywhere from $200 to $6,000, depending on the size and complexity of the system. You can either install a water softener for the whole house or just at your shower heads. If you’re sensitive to sodium or potassium, you can install a salt-free water conditioner.

Because it’s been through the water cycle, evaporating and becoming slightly acidic thanks to dissolved carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, rainwater tends to be naturally soft compared to groundwater, which has just been in contact with limestone. However, the natural hardness level of water always depends on where you are and other factors.

Routine maintenance involves recharging the resin bed with salt or potassium, cleaning components, and periodic inspection.

Yes, it is safe to bathe in yellow water. The iron or tannin content won’t harm your skin, and soap will clean you whether your water is clear or yellow. If you find bathing in yellow water problematic, you can ask a pro to inspect your plumbing and determine how to get your water clear again.
