"I needed for the City permit an engineer to review, recommend changes, and stamp the design drawing of my first rate contractor Bob Post for building a 3rd floor deck on top of my old sleeping porch of my 1910 house. Matthew Holbrook was fast, helpful, and affordable... and I now have a fabulous, safe deck."

"

I called Charles on a Friday afternoon and he suggested Sunday as a good day for him to come round and assess the work.  Charles called around noon on Saturday and asked if he could come that afternoon.   Heck yes!   An appointment was set for today to carry out the work and a time frame of 8am - 9.30 am suggested for the start.   They arrived at 9 am.   The original request was just for the drainage work (cost $350) but my husband called in the meantime and asked them to look at the other two jobs.

Both Charles and his helper are very personable.   All spaces they worked in were left clean and tidy.   All "trash" was bagged or placed where I requested.

I would not hesitate to call this company again for any job .. large or small.

Update:   Charles "et all" came back and removed a window and the siding surrounding it.   He then reframed the area and replaced the window and siding.   He will be returning to replace the drywall.   Once again he did exactly what we requested both efficiently and in a timely manner.   We have been very pleased both with the standard of work and also his efforts to keep costs within reason.

"Nu Look Home Services’ replaced my 31-year-old front door with two side windows unit. Nu Look Home Services’ sent two men, Zack and James to handle my job. They were professionally dressed and courteous. If there was a question as to how I wanted something done, they ask. There were three things that I did need to get done, reinstall my existing screen door, reinstall my doorbell & reinstall the door alarm, which they did. However, we did run into a major and a minor problem. The major problem was that 31 years ago my door opening was 82 inches wide and today’s door openings units are only 80 inches wide. This left a 1-inch gap on either side of the door frame unit. Zack and James had to reconstruct the perimeter of the door frame unit both inside and outside to make this unit look as if it was part of the original construction. Also, they found a piece of floorboard underneath the door frame that had rotted over time and replaced it. The minor problem was that my existing deadbolt lock and door handle were too small to fit the new holes in the door. Not only did they replace the deadbolt lock in my handle but they rekeyed the new locks with my old key so that I still have just one key for all the locks in my home. The job turned out to be a two-day job instead of a one-day job. They stayed with the job until it was completed. Nu Look Home Services employee’s people that have the knowledge and experience that when faced with an unexpected problem on the job, they know how to resolve the problems and make a professionally looking finished product. They were constantly using their vacuum cleaner to keep the installation area clean and the dust down. After the job was completed all the old material was hauled away in the jobsite was cleaned up. Use them again? You bet!"

"I reached out them about a year ago to look at my basement. I needed help with an old existing waterproof system a different company had installed and also to have someone look at the foundation. Marty informed us that our old waterproof system was an open system and that we might have radon coming through it. Sure enough he was correct! We hired a radon specialist and he was able to install a mitigation system. Marty also inspected our walls and advised that our foundation is fine and we did not need anything done at this time. Other companies tried to sell us $10k+ worth of work. I appreciate his honesty and not just trying to sell us something that we didn't need."

"They first gave a fairly detailed quote, then in about a month came back to do the work.  They use a pier system and do all the excavation by hand so it does not tear up the yard.  Takes a little longer but in the end i was very good work.  Had to add on a lot of pipe, that should have been noted on the contract and agreed to before it was done, but in the end they only charged for the actual pipe used to pier to foundation.  Very good at clean up.  Recommend them highly if you want a fair and honest job.

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

A construction manager is particularly useful in the case of a large-scale build with custom design elements, so it’s usually worth it to hire one. They can help manage your budget, maintain quality control, oversee timelines, and navigate unexpected hurdles. While construction managers are pricey, they can actually save money in the long run by identifying cost-saving opportunities and ensuring the project stays within budget.

The depth of any foundation style depends on your climate and how deep the frost line is, as building code requires that the footers of a foundation—which are built into a monolithic slab—sit at least a foot below the frost line. At the southern tip of Florida, for example, a monolithic slab foundation would only need to sit 12 inches under the soil at the widest parts. On some parts of the Canadian border, the frost line is 100 inches, which would mean a minimum of 112 inches, which is prohibitively deep for a monolithic slab.

First, most contractors will have a structural engineer create a report and plan for your project to ensure it’s safe to cut into the load-bearing wall. The contractor will then excavate around the wall, if necessary, measure the opening—allowing for additional space to fit and level the door, and then cut the doorway out. They will likely install a steel lintel as a header over the door for support. Once the doorway is cut out, they’ll demolish the concrete using sledge hammers and masonry chisels, clean up the surrounding concrete, and seal around the door with masonry mortar.

While concrete walls do not need to "breathe" in the traditional sense of the word, they do require waterproofing and dehumidifying methods, particularly in basements below the water table. Concrete both contains moisture from its initial installation and can absorb water when exposed. Ensuring proper basement ventilation , installing a vapor barrier, and controlling water exposure are all important tasks.

Provides expert analysis, ensuring safety and compliance with building codes.
