"Ended up not needing to replace thermostat. ARS technician checked A/C system and found no issues. Discovered nest thermostat was installed by utility company, allowing them to shut it down during peak usage. Previous homeowner is to blame."

"Servicemaster in Greencastle is excellent. I've used them three times, and each time, they've been responsive and reliable, bringing my rugs back clean and fresh smelling, and willing to go the extra mile (with a smile)."

I have an EPA 608 license since 2021(September). I was an HVAC installation helper for ARS rescue rooter from March 2023 to November 2024. From May 2025 to January 2026, I was an HVAC installation helper at Bassett Service. I know how to swap the old unit to replace a new system such as AC pump down, refrigerant reclaim, vacuuming the line set, brazing or pro press, low and high voltages wiring, a new thermostat install or reprogram, and how to diagnose or replace indoor or outdoor unit parts.

"I still have nothing but praise for every person that I have ever dealt with at JL Anderson. From the individuals who come out for maintenance or repairs on my old system to Kirt taking the time to go through every part of my existing system, as well as what Anderson could offer us going forward. Also, it was nice to have Lisa taking care of everything else for us. She did all of our warranty registrations as well as any rebates we were eligible for. It has been almost 3 months and everything is still going great. The new outdoor unit, albeit large, is significantly quieter than our old unit and the variable speed blower is putting more air through our vents than anything our previous system could do. Very pleased with the unit and with Anderson's staff."

Small jobs welcome

"They showed up early, one guy installed the new AC unit, the other guy worked on the new furnace, and shortly there after another 2 guys came in and cleaned the air ducts, and they looked and acted professional, were friendly to talk with and answered any questions I had. I would recommend them to a friend for sure."

"Ricky did a wonderful job on the install and gave a very fair price for the job. It is refreshing to know that there are still honest contractors that will quote a fair price and then stick with that price through the end. When all the other so called "reputable" company's in the Rockville area were charging between 6 and 8 thousand dollar to do the job RL Norman did a great install for less than half the lowest other estimate. Thank you Ricky for a great job well done."

Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

No, you should not attempt to replace an AC evaporator coil yourself. This is a complex task that must be performed by a licensed HVAC technician. The process involves handling hazardous and flammable refrigerants, which poses significant safety risks. Attempting a DIY replacement can also cause further damage to your HVAC system and will likely void its warranty. It is necessary to hire a local AC repair professional for this job.

Yes, ventless portable air conditioners exist, and not all standard portable air conditioners must be vented through a window.

Ventless portable units, often called evaporative coolers, do not have exhaust hoses. They use a water reservoir and a cooling pad to add moisture to the air, making it feel cooler. These units work best in dry climates because humid areas cannot absorb much additional moisture.

For standard portable air conditioners that do require venting, a window is not the only option; they can also be vented through a door, wall, or ceiling. However, it is essential to vent these units properly. Running a standard portable AC without venting it is counterproductive because it needs to expel heat to cool the room. Failing to do so will only increase the room's temperature.

A common HVAC rule is that for every 500 to 600 square feet of living space, you need 1 ton of heating or cooling capacity. Now that you know this common rule, you also need to know that it isn’t very accurate, and a dedicated pro wouldn’t use it for your home. If you talk to a pro who won’t or can’t perform a proper Manual J calculation, consider hiring someone more thorough.

If you don't clean your AC evaporator coils, dirt and debris will build up, which impairs the system's ability to transfer heat. This forces the unit to work harder, leading to inefficient performance, higher energy bills, and frequent breakdowns. Over time, neglected coils can corrode, which may cause refrigerant leaks, or develop mold, ice buildup, and a clogged condensate drain, resulting in poor air quality and an uncomfortable home.

Yes, a frozen AC unit can affect your indoor air quality since the reduced airflow won't be as effective at removing air pollutants, like dust and other allergens. Additionally, ice around the unit can create excess moisture, leading to mold and mildew that can damage your home if you don’t catch it early.
