"It was pretty rocky. At first. Several appoints made by Tri-State no one ever showed up.Crew showed up to install the Generator before the site survey and did not have necessary equipment or cooperation of Electric or gas company nor call before you dig had been notified. I called Tri-State to warn them the call before dig had never been preformed. They said they'd take care of it, did not happen until right before installation crew came back the second time. The first time they were here they could not have installed the generator even had they had all the parts because none of the utilities had been marked. Finally after about three months the Generac was installed and working. I had several questions that I could never get answered by calling Tri-State. One of the installation team had to come back a couple of weeks later to replace a damaged part and he answered all my questions. The guys who installed the Generac were great, the problem is your guys operation center and call center as far as I can see do not communicate very well. Anyway the generator has worked fine in several power outages this spring. I am happy right now but I live in dread something goes wrong and I have to call Tri-State for help."

"Randy is a nice guy. He was on-time and completed the work quickly. I had power run from my house to my detached garage and also had some LED lights installed inside the garage and a motion light on the exterior. The placement of the lights was perfect. They cleaned up after themselves as well. I was not a huge fan of the finish work where the connection was made from the house or through the garage but everything is working correctly, and we have power. I would definitely use him again but would probably discuss in more detail exactly how things will be done before having him start the work."

"Installed lights and outlets in a timely and efficient manner. Cleaned up and left work area neat and orderly fashion. However after he left I noticed one circuit was not working. I called the next day and they sent out another electrician who worked diligently to find the problem. Once found it took only a little while to repair."

"Words can't describe how thankful we are. January 24th hours before the snow storm hit we had electrical problems no electricity. They were here immediately. They located the problem and worked 2 days outside in the snow storm. They cared about our safety. They were knowledgeable, very thorough and clean. We recommend them highly! They have our business. GOD BLESS THEM!!"

"They did a great job! I had 3 outlets in my house that sometimes worked and sometimes didn't. Unlike a prior electrician I hired who told me "there was nothing they could do"... the team at Broad Ripple Electric took the time to investigate the situation, and find the source of the problems, and fixed the issues. They also were able to update my antique doorbell - they installed a new working doorbell while retaining many of the antique parts (for aesthetics) to the old doorbell. They were more than happy to explain to me what the problems were and they were able to come up with solutions that were affordable and of quality. It's clear they are very knowledgeable, and they also cleaned up after their work and were respectful of my house, my time and my loud barking dog!"

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

An undersized whole-house generator has the potential to overheat and shut down when you try to run a central AC system. This scenario can not only damage the whole-house generator, but can also trip your home’s breakers or cause electrical damage. To avoid this situation, hire a local generator installer to correctly size your whole-house generator.

Generators run on a variety of fuel types, ranging from natural gas to solar power. Keep in mind that fuel costs varying by type:

  • Natural gas: $2,000–$21,000 per year

  • Liquid propane: $2,000–$21,000 per year

  • Diesel: $3,000–$20,000 per year

  • Gasoline: $500–$3,000 per year

  • Solar generator: $2,000–$25,000 per unit

  • Battery backup: $10,000–$25,000 per unit

Yes, installing a generator usually increases your property value because buyers are getting the added peace of mind knowing they’ll be able to maintain power through blackouts. In most cases, you should see close to a 100% return on investment (ROI). Keep in mind that home generators usually need a permanent foundation, and installing a concrete slab will likely raise your property taxes slightly.

If your home already has a grinder pump and you’re still noticing issues (like frequently clogged toilets and sinks), it could be time to upgrade your grinder pump. Start by checking your existing horsepower. If there are four or fewer people living in your home, using a 1/2-horsepower grinder pump should be sufficient. Larger households should consider investing in a 1-horsepower grinder pump to maximize wastewater removal efforts.

With proper maintenance, a whole-house generator can last between 20 and 40 years. The specific lifespan depends on how often and for how long the generator is used, and some models may have their life expectancy rated in hours of operation. To maximize its lifespan, expect to spend around $150 to $300 per year for annual maintenance checks from a qualified technician. During these checks, a technician will inspect the engine filter, starting mechanism, fuel, lubrication, and coolant levels. Consulting your installer and choosing a low-impact fuel like natural gas or diesel can also help ensure your generator lasts as long as possible.
