"Sam and his crew were outstanding from start to finish! Sam's son, Lavern, was great on keeping us informed along the way. Definitely recommend to anyone looking to do an addition to their home. They also did a great job on reroofing entire home. The new garage addituon looks like it was built when the house was originally built. Great quality work and attention to detail! Outstanding job and a job well done!!!!!"

"Alan and his crew re-sided our out-of-town Lake property. He drove up to the site and inspected the job and gave us a fair quote. I knew after meeting him that his professionalism and attention to detail would ease my mind that I had found the right company. They started the work and had it totally completed within the week. The job came out beautiful and I would highly recommend Alan and his crew to anyone. Oh, by the way, the neighbors couldn't stop with the compliments. If you want to hire someone and not worry at all, call Alan!"

"Mervin was great to work with. He calls back and shows up on time. They did such a great job on my roof that I hired them to build a deck. I am very happy with both projects. Mervin does things correctly and doesn't take short cuts; I really appreciate that MSW construction is my go to company. I look forward to having Mervin and his crew do more projects at my house in the future. I highly recommend them for yours! Kyah Harward Fort Wayne, IN"

Siding questions, answered by experts

You can put new siding over clapboards, but it’s not recommended. Some sidings, like vinyl siding, can go over clapboards with sheathing like a foam layer in between. However, it’s best to remove clapboard siding if you plan on replacing it with new siding. Burying wood clapboards underneath new siding can create risks of rot and mold, or hidden insect damage. It can also create warping issues over time. Removing clapboards allows you to properly install a new sheathing, as well as clean up the exterior wall and look for any signs of damage.

The living space of a home doesn’t correlate directly with how many square feet of siding you’ll need, but on average, a 2,000-square-foot home will need 1,700 square feet of siding or 17 squares of siding. Your siding measurements will vary depending on the layout of your home, the number of stories, the size of your doors and windows, and even your roof style.

Yes, you can install siding over stucco, but it's crucial to ensure the stucco is in good condition first. Before proceeding, inspect the stucco for any signs of damage, leaks, or mold growth. If you discover water damage, mold, or have ongoing leak issues, it's recommended to remove the stucco completely. This step prevents future problems like mold and pest infestations and allows a professional to repair or replace any damaged sheathing underneath. If the stucco is sound, the installation process involves attaching furring strips to the wall's framing directly through the stucco. The new siding is then installed onto these furring strips. A professional may also need to adjust window and door openings to prevent them from being recessed behind the new siding, which can cause aesthetic issues and create potential leak points.

Yes, mixing siding types will affect your home value, and in most cases, it will improve curb appeal and add to the value of your home. This is especially true if you get the benefit of the high-end appearance of brick or stone siding but save on siding costs by covering most of the exterior with more affordable vinyl or fiber cement.

Traditionally, you place a layer of ⅜-inch foam board beneath aluminum siding. This gives you a smooth surface to which you can fasten the trim and siding. Beneath the foam board, you should have some kind of waterproof sheathing to further protect your home from water damage. It’s possible this sheathing is already under your current siding.
