"I had 4 ceiling fans installed in 4 bedrooms where there were none. They were all totally new installations, all 4, including running the electrical service. Brian Harmeson is a 'professional'. Starting with his initial approach on the phone, his follow up the day before on some options, I could sense that he would be easy to work with. His friendly attitude puts the customer at ease. Another key item is that Brian was punctual! Quality of his work is very good, did a thorough job of clean-up after, very good customer service. I had some additional basic work that I requested him to take a look at and he was kind enough to do so, attended to it and completed all the tasks. I am very pleased with his service and would strongly recommend his service to others. I wish him the very best, look forward to working with him in the future, and passing on his name to my friends if they have a need for an electrician."

Ceiling Fans questions, answered by experts

If you’re removing a ceiling fan without visible screws, start by locating the fan canopy—a round cover placed above the fan blades and motor. There should be a thin ring that can be turned counterclockwise to remove the canopy and reveal the screws. After unscrewing the fan, you can disconnect the wires and remove the entire fan from the mounting hardware. For safety, make sure the fan switch is turned off before you remove the canopy. It may be easier to remove the fan blades first, too.

Fan power is measured by CFM, or cubic feet per minute. For every 1,000 feet of square footage in your attic, you need a minimum of 700 CFM. Steeper roofs may need larger fans or about 840 CFM.  You can figure the size of attic fan you need by multiplying the square footage of your attic floor by 0.7. (multiply by 1.2 for a steep roof and 1.15 for a dark roof). That number is the CFM required for your fan to run efficiently.

When choosing a mounting bracket, you have the option between flush mounts and downrod mounts. Flush mounts are the better option for low ceilings as they feature a lower profile. Downrod mounts are the optimal choice for rooms with high ceilings as they offer a pole that adjusts the height of the fan.

Fans not turning on, wobbling, noisy motors, or faulty remote controls are common issues requiring repair.

Hiring an electrician to install a new ceiling fan may be the best course of action. Installing a ceiling fan requires basic electrical and mechanical knowledge. It also requires holding it up with one hand and in an awkward position, making the installation even more difficult. If you’re uncomfortable with these circumstances, your best bet is to hire a professional.
