If you just have hairline cracks from settlements that are no longer growing, the best option is to seal them with a crack sealant. If the cracks continue to grow, one edge rises above the other, or there are signs that water is getting in through the crack, a professional repair will be necessary. Resurfacing concrete or asphalt driveways involves adding a new top layer to fill in large cracks and potholes. Repaving, however, removes all material from the previous driveway and fills the area in with new materials. Repaving is a chance to change the shape of your driveway and regrade the land.

The method used to repair cracks in your concrete driveway will depend on the extent of the damage, but the most common method for small cracks is to use a driveway resurfacing compound. This solution is either cementitious or made of polyurethane, and it will seal the crack and make your driveway appear undamaged. 

For more severe cracks, you will likely need to hire a professional driveway repair service. They can use mudjacking, epoxy injections, partial driveway replacements, or a combination of these to fix more serious cracks in your concrete driveway and to prevent recurring issues.

A layer of exposed aggregate concrete should be 1 to 2 inches thick if you’re installing it on top of existing concrete. If you’re pouring a new slab with the finish, slab thickness will depend on the application. Exposed aggregate concrete driveways should be 4 to 6 inches thick in most cases or 8 to 12 inches for commercial vehicles. Sidewalks, patios, and walkways should be 4 inches thick.

If the cracks in your concrete patio are cosmetic, you can pour a concrete overlay over the patio to cover them up. However, you shouldn’t cover more severe cracks because the underlying damage will simply cause new cracks to appear in the overlay.
