"Lakeside  arrived a little late and immediately got to work.  Very professional and respectful of my home and possessions.  They took the time to answer questions and explained everything that they would be doing.  I had several estimates and decided to go with Lakeside because they came to the job before the appointment and gave an estimate instead of nickel and diming me for each thing that would be done.  The windows look and feel beautiful.  My one issue is that on their website today, (I had the windows done yesterday) there is a fifteen dollar off coupon for windows.  I wish that Noah had mentioned it to me.  Just like anyone, I would have liked to take advantage of that opportunity."

"Very professional from quote to installation. Did a great job replacing 14 windows (double pane glass packs) of various sizes as well as replace some of the wooden frames that were beginning to rot. It took 2 days for a 2-person crew. Final cost was about $700 more than original quote because there were more windows with rotted wood than originally anticipated but the installation team told us when they discovered the issues and gave us the option to proceed or not before incurring the extra cost which was appreciated. Very pleased with the workmanship. Cost effective given they replaced the glass packs instead of tearing out all of the window frames which were either in good shape or restorable by the crew. We will use Apex again in the future and will recommend to friends."

"Ronnie and his crew were fantastic. They were at my house within hours after I called. Ronnie explained exactly what needed to be done. The shattered glass was cleaned up and the replacement glass was ordered. When the new glass came in an appointment was scheduled and he came out to put it in the door and correct the four casement windows as I had requested. All work was spot on. I highly recommend LDS."

"This is the second time I have used McCann Windows. The installer gave me two options for repairing the window trim. He made the repair to one window, then confirmed that I was happy with my choice before completing the rest. The installation went well and they clean everything up. They were very professional.

"The estimator examined the basement walls and identified four cracks through which water might be coming in and gave a quote.  We agreed to have the work done.  One service man came and filled the cracks in less than the estimated time.  The work involved surface patching the cracks on the inside of the wall, drilling approximately six holes through each crack and injecting a sealant into each crack.  Since we haven't had a hard rain since then, we haven't had a real test of whether it holds water out.

"Like most condo buildings in Chicago, our 6 unit building was poorly built. To make matters worse, the exterior walls were constructed using concrete block that wasn't meant for exterior use. The city of Chicago has recently changed code so condos must be built with water-proof "dry block", but this wasn't used for our building. As a result, we had water issues in most of the units that caused mold problems. Mike from Arrow came out to provide a quote, but ended up not bidding on the work because the building was in such bad shape. He did take the time to show us exactly what issues we were dealing with and recommended steps we should take to make the best out of the situation. He has a lof of experience, is professional, and cares about doing quality work. Of all the masonry people we had come out, he was the only one that took a genuine interest in identifying the root cause of our issues and doing things the right way. He easily could have put together a quick bid and gotten some work, but in the end he recommended we wait to seal the building until the weather was better, and helped us develop a plan to address our issues. Because he guarantees his work and labor, he wasn't comfortable bidding on the job because it was in such bad shape. The fact that he took the time to help us even though he wasn't going to get work was appreciated."

Glass Block questions, answered by experts

Although glass block windows are made of multiple layers of thick glass, they can still break. If an individual block shatters, it can be removed and replaced, but this is a job for a window repair professional. The project is often complex and may require breaking the block further for removal. Do not attempt to handle it yourself, as the broken glass can be dangerously sharp. A professional will have the necessary tools and expertise to replace the broken glass block quickly and safely. Before hiring, confirm that the repair pro has experience with this specific type of window.

Their thickness depends on application, but most glass walls are typically 3/8 to 3/4 of an inch thick. Although it’s not as common, single panes of glass can also be 1 inch thick.

Heavy glass tends to be more expensive than thin glass because it is stronger and more durable. In most cases, ¼-inch-thick glass is ideal for mirrors, and ⅛-inch-thick glass is ideal for residential windows. Heavier glass isn’t always necessary, and can be more challenging to hang or install. Work with a local window installation pro for replacement or new construction windows.

Glass block windows typically last for 15 to 30 years, which is slightly less than the 20- to 50-year lifespan of standard windows. You can extend their life by resealing them every few years. Professional installation is also key to ensuring the windows are placed correctly and will function properly for years to come. A professional installer will have the necessary skills, tools, and knowledge to install these features and can identify potential issues like damaged frames or cramped areas during a consultation.

Glass block installation can be relatively expensive due to the range of material costs and the labor time to assemble this type of specialty window. The process proceeds slowly as the glass does not absorb moisture from mortar and silicone caulk takes longer to harden, leaving spacers to hold up the structure until the caulk or mortar begins to cure. Plus, if your current windows have structural issues or damage, you’ll need to repair them before beginning the project, increasing your bottom line.
