"Lloyd and James (who did the work) are amazing! We had a pipe burst resulting in having to shut off our water. We called around to see if we could get a plumber or general contractor out to fix it but they were only interested if it was going to be a complete remodel/rehab. One even hung up on me in mid sentence. Lloyd took my call and displayed not only compassion for our situation but a sense of urgency. He explained his basic pricing up front and told us that he would try to get someone out to us in the next hour or so. In less than an hour or so James appeared and introduced himself. After showing him the area of the damage and explaining what happened he was not only able to hone in on where the problem pipe was in the wall, but also why it happened. He gave me different options on how he could handle the pipe repair and why each had its merits. He quickly repaired the burst pipe and got us water pretty quick. Professional, courteous, and capable of explaining trades talk to a novice. I highly recommend this company and I will definitely call on them in the future. You should not attempt to snake your sewer yourself. Accessing and snaking your sewer requires heavy-duty equipment, and while renting is possible, misusing it can damage your sewer main and leave you with very expensive repair costs, not to mention potential environmental issues and severe water damage. Accessing your sewer also exposes you to hazardous sewer gasses, and failing to seal the sewer properly after work can be very dangerous. It’s always best to hire a professional sewer cleaner near you to handle this type of work.

First, find the cleanout pipe in your yard. Unscrew the cap—you may need a wrench to do so. Then, get a drain snake. You can use a non-motorized one, but a motorized snake will make the job a little easier. Feed the snake through the pipe until it reaches the clog. Spin the snake continuously, but don’t try to feed it through the pipe anymore. Keep spinning until you feel it break the clog apart.

Thankfully, it’s pretty rare to find a rat in your toilet. It’s more likely in larger cities with big sewer systems that can be feeding grounds for rats, but even then, you still shouldn’t fret. 

“I wouldn’t worry too much about rats coming up through the sewers,” Bradshaw says. “I’d say only one out of a thousand rodent customers we get actually have this problem. And of the 20 or some customers that have had this happen, they’ve all only had just one rat come up this way.”

If you want to avoid using a snake to unclog a drain, or if you don’t have one, try vinegar and baking soda. Pour 1 cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by 1 cup of white vinegar. Wait for 15 minutes, and then run hot water (but not boiling water) down the drain to see if the clog is clear. Repeat multiple times as needed.
