If there are appliances plugged in that are causing the buzzing, wait until the appliance is turned off (or turn it off yourself) and then unplug it from the outlet. Test the outlet by plugging in something that won’t use much power—a small lamp works well. If the outlet still buzzes, have a pro investigate why.

Your outlet should be a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). These outlets will cut power off in the case of an electrical fire, keeping your home and family safe. Extension cords can also be GFCIs. A local electrician can replace older outlets with GFCIs, if necessary.

You can identify Federal Pacific Stab-Lok® breakers by the label on the front of the panel that says “Federal Pacific” or “FPE” and the breaker itself should say “Stab-Lok®” either on the face of the panel or a label inside the panel door. The Stab-Lok® breakers are also usually red on the breaker switch.
