"The rep came out as promised, and gave us a quote on the spot- about $1000. He filled in the three woodpecker holes, and removed my messy attempts to eradicate the bird. He then added several "toys" to keep the bird away- an owl face with metallic streamers, and four little bicycle reflectors to confuse it. Finally, he set up a speaker that broadcasts timed recordings of bird distress calls and predator bird calls. He came back a week later and painted the repairs, using paint we gave him. Final report- we have not seen the woodpecker since. Nice job!"

"Frank took care of my skunk problem professionally & swiftly. Something was digging small holes all over my back and side yard. I made the classic homeowner mistake of getting a live trap cage and setting it myself, without really thinking through what to do if I caught something. Set it out Friday night and sure enough, at 6am Saturday morning I've caught a skunk. Now what? Checked the Kane County animal control site and they won't do anything. Started calling nearby local wildlife removal companies that advertise 24 hour service, and get a lot of recordings to "leave an message and we'll get back to you." Then I run across Frank's listing on Google, which shows he's in the next town over and he's open for business at 7am. Give him a call at 7:02am and he picks up the phone. Thanks me for calling and say's he'll be over shortly. Quotes me a price that i feel is very fair. Thirty minutes later Frank pulls up, and takes care of the removal. Gave me a good price since I had already purchased the trap and did the capture. Good guy, very knowledgable. Highly recommend. PS. A couple of hours later I heard back from one of the 24 hour companies. They quoted a price twice what Frank charged. Never did hear back from the others I left messages with."

Bird Control questions, answered by experts

Look for goose repellents that contain the ingredient methyl anthranilate. This is a natural chemical found in grape juice. In human food, it’s often used as grape flavoring. With geese, it’s highly irritating. Grape Kool-Aid contains methyl anthranilate, the active ingredient in most bird repellents. It won’t harm geese, but it will deter them.

No, you shouldn’t have to worry about bats in your yard as long as they don’t make their way inside your house. Typically, bats hang around backyards in order to consume bugs, especially if they’re located in the U.S. Bats that are native to North America can consume more than 500 bugs per hour, so they may actually benefit your yard if mosquitoes are prevalent.

When it comes to keeping birds from doing their business on your porch rails, you have several DIY options and home remedies you can try:

  • Tie a fishing line from one end of the deck post to the other. Birds won’t be able to see the line across the railing, so they can’t land on it.

  • Hang wind chimes close by, which may scare birds away.

  • Apply a bird gel repellent to the railings, which contains smells that birds generally don’t like. Or, similarly, you can apply citronella or lemon oil around the railings, since birds don’t like strong smells.

Woodpeckers usually feed on homes when there is a food source present, and termites are one possible source. However, the presence of woodpeckers doesn’t necessarily mean there are termites. They may also be feeding on more harmless insects like ants or spiders. If woodpeckers seem drawn to one particular part of your home’s siding, it might be worth hiring a termite inspector to check for the presence of these pesky critters.

It can be difficult to know what type of animal is in your attic until you see it. But several clues can help you narrow down the suspects:

  • Sounds: Smaller animals like rats and mice make scurrying and tapping/gnawing sounds. Larger animals like raccoons and opossums make louder clambering noises. Also, note when animals are noisy: Squirrels are active during the day, while rats are busiest at night.

  • Droppings: Rats and mice leave small, rice-shaped droppings (the rat’s version is significantly larger). Bigger droppings belong to larger critters like raccoons. As long as you’re not squeamish, an image search can help you identify what you’re seeing in your attic.

When in doubt, take photos of damage or other evidence and show them to an experienced pest control pro.
