"MQ Painting was very professional in every aspect of the work they completed for us. They power washed every surface prior to painting. All surfaces were sanded or scraped as needed. Two coats of stain we applied to all surfaces. The garage doors were stripped, stained and varnished. The deck railings were completely replaced and painted on a very large deck. Originally, Jose thought only a portion of the railing spindles needed to be replaced. As the job proceeded it was apparent that all spindles and railing wood needed to be replaced. The only additional charge was for the materials, not for labor even though every spindle needed to be individually cut from larger pieces of lumber. MQ was the only painting contractor who bid on our paint job who was willing to do all the woodwork repairs needed on the deck. Other contractors said we'd need to have someone repair the deck and then they would paint it. We appreciated working with just one contractor. Their painting and carpentry work was top notch. All workers were neat, punctual and conscientious. All materials and tools were picked up and stored at the end of every work day. I discovered MQ Painting through Angie's List. I highly recommend MQ Painting and would absolutely hire them again."

"I don’t do reviews typically but I am making an exception in this case. Our three story, 102-year house needed a significant facelift to the exterior. This included carpentry repairs to replace rotting window sills and deck stairs, stucco repair, painting and staining. Peter Fortune responded quickly to a request for a quote. He was punctual, straight forward and professional. He provided the quote rapidly and an estimated time for the completion of the project. Despite one of the rainiest springs on record, the job was done on time. The carpentry crew arrived first and did their part promptly. The quality of the work was top-notch. The crew chief was exceedingly polite and helpful. The finish crew impressed me like none other. Having worked as a painter in an earlier life, I appreciate good preparation of surfaces. There is a lot of detail on this old house and the crew took care to strip the paint off down to the work surface. This had clearly not been done for many years on the house. The subsequent paint job looks all the sharper as a result. The crews were neat, did not leave trash on the property and did not damage plants. And they were nice guys as well. This is how jobs should be done. My wife and I were so pleased, we have commissioned some interior work with Fortune."

"Patrick was very amenable to my requests and agreed to use an ecofriendly product at my request. His firm is EPA certified for Pb paint work. He was very easy to work with, easy to contact, and his bid came in much lower than other businesses. His crew did extra carpentry work to fix my deck, and the charge was negligible. His painters were very pleasant (Tony was the crew leader) and also extremely customer friendly. I highly recommend this business."

"Adelmo and his crew were fantastic. We hired them to build a pergola on our roof deck as well as re-stain the existing wood from a red paint to a more natural wood stain. The quality of their work is amazing. You can't even see the old red paint and the pergola turned out exactly as we imagined. Adelmo did a great job communicating the step by step process throughout the project. I would definitely hire them again for any future projects."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

No, it is not okay to paint over rotted wood. Painting over rotted wood will not address the underlying issue and can trap moisture, leading to further decay. Properly addressing the rotted wood by removing and replacing or repairing the damaged areas is necessary before you can even consider painting.

You can paint over old paint on a concrete porch. For the best results, you should first clean the surface and remove as much paint as you can. A power washer is helpful here, but you’ll also want to scrape as much of the old paint away as possible. Then you should prime the porch before repainting it.

Two coats of stain are ideal for the best protection and aesthetic appeal. However, if your decking is made of particularly dense hardwood, you may only need one coat. If you want an intense color, two coats are ideal.

Yes, it is generally a very good idea to seal your deck after pressure washing. Power washing removes not only dirt and debris but also a thin layer of wood, leaving the surface exposed and more susceptible to weathering. Sealing is almost always needed after this process. After a general cleaning, sealing isn't automatically necessary if the existing sealant is still intact. You can test the surface by placing a few drops of water on it. If the water beads up, the sealant is working. If it soaks into the wood, it's time to apply a new sealant. If it has been a few years, it's wise to remove the old sealant, wash the deck, and reseal for maximum protection.

It's okay to walk on a newly painted deck after about four to six hours as long as the weather has been dry. Be sure to wait at least 24 hours before you place any outdoor furniture or grills on a freshly painted deck, though.
