"It went fine. They did a good job of working around the maze of piping under our kitchen sink, trouble shooting, and giving me clear descriptions of 2 different repair options. The repair person had some good advice regarding removing grease build
up ourselves and how to avoid clogs that may come from a garbage disposal. (I don't know if ours did.)
The only thing I didn't like was that the bill at the end seemed a little high, and they didn't include a breakdown of how they had arrived at that amount. (e.g. parts and service hourly costs. Big Deal discounts, etc.)

"As many people in the Chicagoland area likely experienced, we had some plumbing issues as a result of the Great Polar Vortex of 2019. Since we were running our water to prevent pipes from freezing, we found that we had drainage issues with our upstairs bathroom. We noticed a leak staining our kitchen ceiling and basement wall so we figured it was coming from the upstairs bathroom since that's where we had the sink turned on to drip. Guillermo came over on a Saturday to take a look at the problem. He arrived on time but wasn't 100% prepared for the task at hand. I was a little concerned with his indecisiveness on where to begin looking for a problem. He kept asking me where I wanted him to cut into the wall and look but I'm not the professional, you are. I guess maybe he was doing it because he was going to have to cut into drywall and he wanted me to give him permission to do it so I wouldn't be mad? I'm not sure but it wasn't super professional especially since I have no clue what is going on inside the walls. I don't know what different types of leaks look like and, presumably, he does. He ended up cutting way too much drywall, including in the back of the pipes and then couldn't even see the drain pipe to the plumbing he was there to inspect. Our insurance likely won't cover that so we'll be on the hook for repairing it. Sigh. Once Guillermo guessed the source of the leak, the plumber still had questions. He basically said he could cut into the ceiling under the toilet and look around or take the toilet out and see if it was a flange issue. He wanted me to make that call even though I don't know anything about plumbing. Of course, he cuts into more drywall, can't see a leak, so he still has to go take the toilet off. Turns out the toilet and the drain pipe were the issues. In the midst of cutting into the ceiling, the plumber realizes he doesn't have a ladder tall enough to see into the ceiling and neither do we. He has to go to a hardware store in the middle of all this to get one and then he comes back with a broken one (not his fault, but such a time suck). So he's out again to get a new ladder to replace the broken one just so he can look up into our ceiling. I feel like all the plumbers should be equipped with ladders and other equipment they might need in all kinds of houses because we aren't the only people in Chicago with high ceilings. That ended up being 90 minutes of time we'd never get back just waiting for him to come back and finish the diagnosis. Once we figured that out, we waited for the instillation crew to come in and replace a few feet of drain pipe and install a new flange for the toilet. We had to wait four days for someone to come and do the install which seems a bit long for a job that takes about two hours. Same thing happened with the install crew: they didn't have the correct size flange so they had to stop work and go to the hardware store. They were gone for almost an hour so my husband was just stuck waiting. They did a good job on the install once they were back and had the right equipment so our toilet is in fine, working order and draining properly. We ended up paying about $1900 for all of this work, the majority of which was labor costs. It really seems a bit high that these guys are making about $250 an hour for "work" that included going to Home Depot to get more supplies that they didn't come with in the first place. The work they did shouldn't have even taken that long and I got stuck with the bill, which seems odd. Another $375 of that was just to let the first plumber make holes in my wall that weren't totally necessary just to discover the toilet flange wasn't big enough. I know that it's not his fault that he couldn't see that the toilet was installed improperly from the outside, but it was really upsetting to have the plumber basically ask me what to do in terms of where to look for plumbing problems I know nothing about. Their customer service was always nice and easy to deal with, so that was a plus. Overall, I am happy with the work that they did since my toilet works and is no longer leaking, but I felt like the process of dealing with the plumbers in the house was somewhat unprofessional since the first didn't seem to know what to do and both sets of plumbers did not come prepared with the equipment they needed to do their jobs."

"My wife and I live in a house built in the 1950's. Waste water was backing up into a sink. An exterior cleanout needed to be installed and Robert and his crew turned out to be the answer. They were not the cheapest quote nor were they the most expensive. The job was expertly done with care taken to keep the operation as clean as possible. Except for one small glitch in the scheduling of the work, the job was accomplished beautifully (if you can say that about a cleanout) and all drainage has been restored to normal."

"The team at J Plumbing did an amazing job! Even when coming out for the quote they were very professional and knew the right questions to ask. They installed a Navien tankless water heater (which seems to be the standard in the industry as all three other companies quoted the same) with an 11.5 gpm water flow rate for THOUSANDS less than we were quoted by others. Since installation our hot water is consistent and never-ending! We are ecstatic with the results, and will look to J Plumbing for future needs as well."

"I've used Splash Plumber for several projects and have never been disappointed. I've worked with Tom McHugh and he has always been responsive, punctual and very professional. Every job he has done for me, you would never know he was there because he is so meticulous and clean; I can't say that about too many service providers. His rates are very well priced and fair; I've never felt as if I was taken advantage of and he always makes a point to tell you upfront exactly what will be need in a job so there are no surprises or hidden costs. I've recommended Tom and Splash Plumber many times and will continue to do so; I appreciate their integrity, knowledge base and work ethic.

"The toilet in my rental unit was notoriously bad at flushing. We snaked the drain three times in the last week, and still the flush is very weak and doesn't clear the bowl. I opted for a new toilet as the existing one was 10 years old and has never been very good. Earl noticed the gerryrigged line running from the sink supply, and suggested checking the valve to see if that made the tank fill faster. It did. Earl was very quick, nice, and professional. Now the toilet is brand new and flushes in a flash, and I was able to remove the 4ft hose draped from the sink to the toilet.

"Jeffrey and his workers were easy to work with as usual. They were on time and their work was performed on schedule. The plumbing they installed was well done with good craftsmanship. Jeffrey did go above and beyond duty when he discovered that the sink had not been attached to the countertop which was installed the day before. Typically the countertop installers attach the sink before setting the countertop in place because the sink attachment connectors are nearly impossible to access once the counter is installed. My client was very upset when he told her that he couldn’t hook-up the sink until the sink was attached to the countertop as she had enough of doing dishes in the sink. Attaching the sink to the countertop is not plumbing work. At this point she called me over to help resolve the situation. After talking with Jeffrey about the situation he agreed to install the sink so that he could hook up the plumbing and be finished with this job. He struggled with the sink installation because as already mentioned he could hardly access the sink connectors. In the end he did a great job installing and hooking up the sink. He did charge extra for the sink install but it was well worth it as my client now had a fully working kitchen and she wouldn’t be washing dishes in the bathtub anymore. I have been using Jeffrey Service to fix the plumbing problems in my own old home and recommending him to my clients and friends for at least 10 years and I have yet to be disappointed. In fact, most of the people I have recommended him to thanked me for the introduction and still call him back when they need a plumber."

Sink Installation questions, answered by experts

Most faucets come with a rubber or plastic gasket that prevents leaks—but that’s not always the case. If your faucet doesn’t come with a gasket or it’s leaking, use a caulk gun to seal the gaps and prevent water damage.

Try to tighten the clevis crew and adjust the lift rod if your sink stopper won’t stay up. Sometimes your screws became too loose over time, and as a result, there wasn’t enough resistance to keep the sink stopper up. If a damaged lift rod is the cause of the problem, you will need to replace it with a new rod.

The cost depends on the parts, labor, extent of damage, and whether extensive plumbing modifications are required. Typical repairs cost $150-$300.

There’s no definitive answer regarding whether equipping your kitchen island with a stove or sink is better. The right option depends on each homeowner's lifestyle, cooking style, and kitchen layout. If you cook with guests over, having a stove that faces outward can facilitate socialization while you prepare dinner. On the other hand, if you use a lot of produce, having your sink by your prep area makes it easier to clean veggies while cooking. A sink also makes cleanup easier by allowing you to wipe down your prep area and place your dirty dishes in the sink.

Yes, it is often possible to replace an undermount sink without removing the countertop, but success can depend on the countertop material. For materials like granite, the process is relatively straightforward. However, laminate or uniquely shaped countertops might need to be removed or modified.

The process typically involves shutting off the water supply, disconnecting the drain and plumbing pipes, cutting through the old silicone seal, and carefully lowering the sink from below. This requires a good understanding of plumbing and the right tools. If you are not confident in performing the replacement yourself, it is recommended to hire a countertop specialist or a plumber to handle the task.
