You can technically use wall paint on a ceiling, but it’s not ideal. Wall paint is thinner and more prone to dripping, which makes it harder—and messier—to apply overhead. The other major drawback is that black paint is harder to paint over with a lighter color. You’ll need to fully prime your wall with a good quality primer and use at least two coats of paint to get back to a lighter color after it’s been painted black.

It’s best to use an exterior latex acrylic paint to promote maximum adhesion to composite decking. This flexible paint type can better cope with the natural expansion and contraction that can occur with composite deck boards. Oil-based paints won’t adhere as effectively and are more likely to crack and peel as the boards flex. Testing whether your chosen paint will stick on an inconspicuous section or a spare board is a good idea.

It’s important to wait until the drywall is completely dry before painting the wall. This can take up to 24 hours. If you paint while the drywall is still wet, the paint could bubble, peel, or have trouble sticking to the wall. To speed up the drying process, you can turn on a fan, run a dehumidifier, or open windows.

Painting in ideal temperatures (between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit) with moderate humidity and ample ventilation is the best way for your paint to dry properly. You can turn on box fans and crack open windows to add circulation, but be sure no dust or debris gets on your wet walls. In the end, it’s best to be patient and ensure your paint is fully dry before applying a second coat or moving items back into a room.
