"Ralph and Ralph Jr were a pleasurer to work with. They did a great job installing TVs and mounts at all of your medical clinics. "Customer service was exceptionable and a pleasant experience. We had tree damage that cut our ComEd power (3PM). After ComEd cut tree limbs we were told the Weather Head had to be replaced before power was restored. We searched Angi & contacted MD (4AM) they texted within minutes and asked when they could call at our convenience or we could call them. We called @ 9AM and MD said Claude could come that afternoon. I said OK and explained what needed to be done. I was then told to hold and MD came back and said someone could be there in 35-40 minutes and I said great. They came out (10AM) checked line and said Meter Housing had to also be replaced. They had to go to a supplier to get housing and fixed both including reattaching AT&T line. Since there was excess electrical wire when the original Weather Head was installed MD was able to save us the cost of new wiring. They were done be 11AM and ComEd was done at 3PM that day. Thank You and your HOLMES attitude MAKE IT RIGHT the 1st time."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Replacing the panel itself takes four to eight hours of work by a professional. However, if associated wiring and related components also require replacement, the labor time increases to 20 to 30 hours. Your electrician can speed up the process by bringing in a team of pros to handle ancillary tasks.

Single switch installs are quick DIY projects, but you should consider enlisting the help of a pro for more complicated replacements—like a smart switch or if you live in an older home with outdated wiring. Professional electricians are trained in the latest code regulations. They are also insured, licensed, and bonded.

You can distinguish the amplitude and voltage of most outlets by looking at the shape and positioning of the holes. Other features like buttons, switches, and USB ports help identify electric outlets, too. Use labeled images, like the ones we’ve included above, to cross-reference with your outlets.

A standard three-prong electrical outlet typically lasts for about 15 years with normal use and should be replaced accordingly. GFCI outlets may have a longer lifespan of 15 to 25 years. While some outlets can last longer if used infrequently, they can also fail prematurely. Reasons for early failure include poor wiring, an overloaded circuit, improper grounding or installation, or loose plugs. Signs that an outlet is failing include flickering lights, overheating, a discolored or melted faceplate, plugs that fall out easily, or frequently tripping circuit breakers. It is essential to address faulty outlets promptly to avoid safety hazards, especially in homes older than 15 years.

Amps describe the amount of energy that can flow through a circuit breaker. Every electrical device that’s attached to the breaker requires about 1.5 amps. While that equates to roughly 13 receptacles per 20 amps, using slightly fewer ensures that your circuit will always have enough energy for sudden power surges instead of tripping when one occurs. In general, 10 to 12 receptacles is recommended for a 20 amp circuit.
