"They did a fantastic job. Very clear with communicated details and price, plus gave some great suggestions especially if they felt like another option would look better. We originally hired them to change our stair railings and ended up helping us with hanging/fixing closet doors as well as finished our stairs going to the basement too. On time every morning and couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out. Highly recommend them!"

Customers say: True professional

"The job went beautifully. Joesph is a Craftsman, an artist. He believes in doing things the right way. He installed our kitchen. He took care in making sure all the cabinets were installed properly. He was responsible for all the casings and mouldings in our entire house. Our home is an 1889 Italianate. Special care needed to be taken. And yes, we would hire him again and again. What a kind, knowledgeable craftsman that believes in the highest standards and quality of work."

"Dave was very accommodating and genial. He showed up when he said he would. We had our railings powder coated (which he subs out), so the timing was somewhat out of his hands, but all was done in a timely manner. Most importantly, the railings are beautiful!"

"We hired Brandon to tear down and rebuild our existing deck and screen it in. We also had him cover up our front stairs with composite decking over the concrete. His attention to detail and craftsmanship was excellent. He put in long days to complete the projects on time and correctly. All passed city inspections without issues. He was easy to work with and worked with us even as we made last minute changes. We are so impressed with his work that we are bringing him back in the Spring to replace and repair our front door. Don't pass him up!"

Install Stair Railings questions, answered by experts

Annually, to check for structural stability, surface wear, and secure fittings.

Most building codes require that railing spindles (also known as balusters) on decks or stairs be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard is often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' which means a sphere with a 4-inch diameter should not be able to pass through the opening between balusters. This rule is in place to prevent small children and pets from slipping through the railing. For the same reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck or floor surface should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is essential to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.

Spiral staircases can be installed outdoors using weather-resistant materials, such as galvanized steel, aluminum, or treated wood. Outdoor installations may require additional coatings or finishes to prevent rust and decay, and costs may be higher due to site prep and exposure to the elements. Outdoor staircases must also comply with local building codes, which can affect the dimensions, handrail requirements, and load capacities to guarantee safety in all weather conditions.

The maximum measurement between stair stringers is typically 18 inches on-center. However, the International Building Code only requires that a staircase can resist a live load of 40 pounds per square foot in residential construction.

A properly installed spindle should last decades or more, depending on the material, environmental conditions, and wear-and-tear from teething puppies or kids clunking bags up and down the stairs. Wood spindles may need more frequent maintenance and eventual replacement compared to metal or composite alternatives. Regular inspection and maintenance will help maximize their lifespan.
