Install Stair Railings questions, answered by experts

Standard residential stair treads need to be at least 1 inch thick. Open staircases without risers must be at least 1-1/2 inches thick. 

Deck stairs should have at least three stringers rather than two. The recommended minimum width for stairs is 36 inches, and the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors recommends at least three cut stringers to provide sufficient support on wood decking stairs of this width. Generally, stringers should be a maximum of 16 inches apart for wood decking and 12 inches apart for more flexible composite decking.

While they sound similar, handrails and guardrails serve different purposes. A handrail is the part of the railing you grip for balance and support while walking up or down stairs. A guardrail, on the other hand, is a safety barrier designed to prevent falls from elevated platforms such as balconies, decks, or stair landings. A single rail system may serve both functions in some staircases, but code requirements can differ for each.

If your home already has stairs and you’ll be upgrading or improving them, then stairs can increase home value. However, it depends on whether a potential buyer wants stairs in their home or not. Some buyers may prefer to have everything ground level or may have difficulty climbing stairs, so that feature might deter them from buying.

Railing height codes do not differ for indoor and outdoor structures. Instead, what will have the biggest impact is the type of rail (hand versus guard rail), what your local building codes dictate, and the scope or height of your stairs, deck, or balcony to begin with.
