"We made an appointment to have our home done. They showed up and were very professional. They helped us choose a good roof and ordered everything. The four types of roof sheathing are plywood, oriented strand board (OSB), planks, and tone-and-groove boards. The overwhelming majority of homes use the first two (especially OSB) and the other two are not often seen outside of special use cases. You cannot replace granules that have been lost off shingles. The granule embedding process is part of shingle manufacturing, and once the bond holding the granules to the shingles has been lost, the granules are gone for good. Shingles with granule loss must be fully replaced to continue offering adequate protection.

Many insurance policies will not cover a roof with two layers of shingles. An additional layer of shingles increases the risk of various kinds of damage, and insurers typically won’t pay claims on a roof with an overlay. Adding a layer of shingles may even jeopardize your insurance coverage entirely, so check your policy to ensure you stay within coverage guidelines. 

A shingle roof costs between $7,500 and $24,000 in total. The exact cost depends on the size of your roof and the number of bundles of shingles required. A bundle of shingles typically costs between $40 and $60, though contractors might be able to get a lower price than you’d get buying from a local hardware store.
