Yes, a heat pump water heater can work in colder climates but it’s much more effective where it’s warm. The reason is that the heat pump needs ambient warmth in the air to compress. The less warmth, the more compression required, thus using more electricity and offsetting the energy-efficient benefits.

One of the primary benefits of a heat pump water heater is how cost-effective it is. How much you save will depend on your water usage and electricity costs. That being said, we can ballpark savings for the average home of between $100 and $500 per year. You can increase that savings rate by researching and applying available energy incentives available in your area. If you really want to focus on cost, consider a tankless water heater.

You can and should vent the gas from your hot water heater to the outside of your home. Traditionally, these gases were vented back to other gas appliances, like stoves or furnaces, but many jurisdictions have outlawed this practice due to the risks it provides. 

Most water heaters today use atmospheric venting that exhausts the gas out of the home through a pipe.

Most hot water heater manufacturers recommend replacing the anode rod about once every three to five years. Anode rods sacrifice themselves by collecting iron, limestone, and other minerals that would otherwise corrode your hot water heater tank. Check the rod more frequently if you have hard water or use a water softener. 

Venting a gas water heater out of the roof is preferable in most cases. Heated exhaust gases naturally rise, so a vertical vent pipe is efficient. If you’re trying to vent through a pipe exiting a wall, the angle of the pipe may be more horizontal than vertical, making the venting system less effective. If you go through a wall, you may need to add a fan to ensure a successful expulsion of the gases outdoors.
