"At first I was skeptical about hiring a smaller company to do work on our property, we needed quite a be bit done. After getting bids from some bigger companies I realized going with a smaller local company was a better choice. During all the work they did, there was a couple hick ups due to the massive boulders that where in the way. They were very clear with communication on what was going on, and the time it was going to add onto the project to remove these huge things. I had them make trenches about 150 yards long for electrical, and another 150, plus some for 5 water spigots for a trench, and we wanted the water lines ram through conduit for extra protection. They also installed a septic system for our shop and house. After that I talked to them about grading an area for the house to be built on and finishing our driveway and they were please to have more work done. Everything is completed and I could not be happier with them and recommend to anyone I know or hear needs work done. Thank you S&P for your hard work."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

How deep your septic system needs to be into the ground depends on several factors. In extremely cold environments, the tank needs to rest below the maximum frost line, which can be up to six or eight feet deep. The standard burying depth for most systems is between a few inches and four feet below ground level. Depth can also depend on the slope of the landscaping and other property variables.

No, a ditch isn’t a trench. A ditch is an open, relatively shallow channel that’s carved out of the ground and used for drainage purposes. In contrast, a trench is a deeper excavation that’s entirely underground. Trenches have many uses, including gas lines, sewage systems, and electrical wiring. Unlike trenches, ditches don’t get filled back in with dirt after they’re dug.

Slab foundations are more affordable than crawl spaces because they require minimal excavation, as the slab sits directly on the ground or on footers that only sink a few feet into the ground. Crawl spaces require excavation of the entire footprint of the home to several feet below the surface. Not only does that mean higher labor costs, but more materials are necessary for the concrete foundation walls.

You can dig 60 to 80 linear feet by hand per day depending on the depth. Digging a 100-foot trench by hand will take you two work days, but it can take longer if you have heavy or rocky soil. If you’re digging a deep trench or one that’s over 100 feet, consider renting a mechanical trencher, such as a walk-behind or ride-on, or calling a pro for help.

Digging a well can cost between $20 and $25,000, depending on your needs. If you’re looking to dig a well yourself, all you need is a shovel. If you’re looking to have a well drilled by a professional, you can expect to pay around $15 to $30 per foot. The total cost of drilling a well will average to $5,500.
