While blacktop is heated to 300 degrees or more, hot-mix asphalt is heated to a lower temperature, typically between 275 and 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Consult an asphalt driveway professional about which type of material is the best fit for your future asphalt driveway.

An ideal driveway gradient is between 2% and 5%. Anything lower than 1% or higher than 15% can cause problems for your car or property. A driveway with less than a 1% slope increases your likelihood of flooding and water damage, while a driveway with a 15% grade or higher can be too steep for safe traveling.

The best steep driveway material is permeable pavers filled with gravel or crushed stones. From there on, regularly clean your pavers and try to keep them dry. You can also seal your paver as a semi-permanent solution — just make sure you reseal every 3 to 5 years.

Regular maintenance, such as filling cracks, reapplying sealer, and ensuring that water does not erode the base material, can help extend the lifespan of your driveway. Gravel driveways should be regraded to fill in uneven areas every year or two, depending on how frequently it is needed.
