The cheapest and most inexpensive way to side a house is to use vinyl. Vinyl is very low-cost but may not last as long as natural materials or metal. However, it often lasts the same length of time the owners plan on living in the home (about 20 to 40 years). Certain types of vinyl siding, like vinyl shake, can be as low as $3 per square foot, but ask a siding pro if the lowest-cost option is the best material for your particular home. 

Professional installers typically recommend caulking between siding boards, but it depends on the material. With Hardie board and fiber cement siding, manufacturers don't recommend adding caulk because it can trap moisture in the joints or discourage flexibility in fluctuating temperatures. Consult your local siding contractor about caulking best practices before adding any to your home’s exterior.

Similar to other types of wood siding consisting of natural materials, cedar siding should last 20 to 40 years. However, the lifespan for any wood siding, including cedar, can be far shorter without the proper repair and maintenance work. Don’t put off making repairs, or problems could worsen quickly. While you can repair minor holes and cracks in the siding shakes, rot and warping requires replacing the boards. 

Fiber cement siding is the best siding to install over stucco because it offers many of the same benefits for homes where stucco is common, including fire resistance, insect resistance, and good insulation. Fiber cement siding is also rigid, so it won’t warp over time like vinyl siding might if installed over furring strips.

Siding lasts for between 20 and 40 years, at a minimum, but the lifespan you’ll see from your new siding depends on the type. Vinyl and aluminum siding have average lifespans of 20 to 40 years, while wood and real stone siding can last up to 75 years. Steel and fiber cement siding can last even longer and often have a minimum lifespan of 50 years. The climate and weather in your area play important roles in siding lifespan.
